Dormer drill sets

Hi all

My mrs has give me some money for my birthday , im looking to get a dormer drill set with it , iv found plenty on ebay but which are the best ones for machine / metalwork , most seem to be a002 or a095 .

hi Chris, my personal choice is to go for cobalt drills, i have a set of dormer cobalt drills and they last well so long as you keep the speed down, ive drilled stainless with them as well. not sure what code they are though, A7 something or other, i'll check.

ok so mine are A777 which is Cobalt, bronze treated. They are more expensive but a lot more durable.

All depends on what you are going to be drilling really, if your only going to be drilling mild steel then a set off HSS drills will do the job just fine and you'll save some pennies as well.

Can you sharpen drills? if so then this may be the way to go but if your going to be drilling any harder materials i.e stainless, high tenstile materials etc then i would personally invest in a set of A777's!

All down to preference really but no matter what you buy you'll end up needing to sharpen them at some point.

After consulting my Dormer catalouge (from 09) so might not be totally accurate the A095 seems too be a drill set filled with A002 drills. i would try to get one of those with drills between 1.0mm- 13mm x 0.5 which means the drills are in 0.5mm increments. The a002 is Hss tin coated drills.

I have a couple of the a002 drills and really like them , drilled loads of holes and still sharp , I have also used them on stainless steel .

Got to be honest i tried various Dormer last year A002, A777 and something else. None are as good as what they replaced a basic set of Hertel.

Tooling wise every things gone down the pan the last 10 years, dont know who to trust any more.
Theres Titex best drills ever had.

Tracy tools do drill sets, by far cheaper than else where. Machine mart do the cheapest cobalt at 20ish quid, but only 1-10mm in 0.5

As for whos are the best. Pot luck these days. I just keep them sharp.

I got a set of dromer bits the other month off amazon and have been disappointed not a patch on the older set I use at work. For the money the RS own brand is good

i use standard hss dormer sherwood and presto along with guhring using them at the right speed and feed along with cutting compound they will cut fairly hard steel and stainless no probs no need for fancy coated stuff that wears off

Seem a good set and I did 60 8mm holes in 316 8mm plate yesterday and looked as good as when I started. We use a mixture of stuff in bigger sizes on the lathes and mills

I use Oooooold dormer and presto and newish sherwood bits all good stuff although the presto are probably the best.

I also have some new dormer (manufactured abroad) and while they are a million times better than cheapo drill bit they tend to grab more than the others.

Guhring are currently good, better than Dormer.
See if theres any Hertel branded ones, milling cutters are still good.

The best ones for the price I have found are powerfix from lidl supermarket 1 -10mm hss colbalt coated £7.99 and are excellent,( they where even better when they where £5.99!) I have drilled out broken 12.9 cap heads with them spring steel and through welded steel joints with no issues, the biggest problem I find, are that electric hand drills are far to fast, ok they are variable speed but to keep a drill bit in good condition you need to keep them cutting, that means the drill is loaded but not turning fast enough to cool itself. I have an old 1/2" ingersol rand air drill its tiny compared to an electric drill and slow but man can that thing drill.
Manufactures now seem to think you dont need a gearbox coz its got variable speed but thats when you need the power when its going slow!

One thing that knackers them is when people have them in a electric drill and think more revs makes it more likely to cut. The key is plenty of lubrication and coolant with a good feed to keep the cutting edge in cool material and the correct RPM. If I were to get a new set (Have all my grandads presto ones) Then I'd go for the
Guhring over dormer.

I wouldn't use a carbide drill in anything but a lathe or mill. As they're so easy to ruin and chip/break. Best for CNC with precise feedrates and speeds and loadsa coolant .
