Nearly all the 6 wheeled fire engines were only 6x4 ie 6 wheels but only 4 drove, the third axle (the rear), was for the weight capacity.
I also believe all the 6x4 are coming out of service as the requirement is they must be all wheel drive, so lot have come out of service and companies like Foley's who have a set up that will easily convert to 6x6. There system bolts to the front of the middle axle and then takes the drive to the diff but also over the top of the axle, then a prop shaft to rear axle.
been continuing to work on Doris, to make the body work look better took the passenger rear wing off, noticed need a bit of welding, which I have done, not pretty but its solid, it was for the rubber seal that stops muck being flung up inside the wing.
Have carried out trying to repair the ali wing, made some patches from ali to fit in side, used a sealant to stick together and a couple of pop rivets, made stronger has taken the flex out on the outside filled with fibre glass and then padding, it is much tidier and will just paint, as hoping at a later date will repaint.
But have a question where the ali wing attaches to the steel shell, can anyone recommend a sealant to stop corrosion between the two metals. Will try and take some more photo's.

I know I am really bad at updating etc, but work has progressed very slowly, during the summer spent lot of time trying to make the rear wings look decent and solid. This was using fibra glass and filler, the passenger side took three attempts, plus needed to change the rear seat box as it was noticed the rear door would not shut properly as the seat box, was slightly too proud, angle grinder and hammer now sorted. The drivers side 1st attempt very pleased.
Both rear wings have been sanded and are fairly close to being ready for painting.
Not sure if any of you have ever had the situation where, you keep looking at something, decide yep that's what I will do and when you start, think no that will mot work, and then sit down and contemplate it again, well this has lasted over many months, basically, I wasted so much time on something that should have been so simple the problem is running copper fuel lines from the tank to the engine, with a couple of notes, it is an old tank so the fuel pump will be external, engine is EFI so needs high pressure.
Finally the penny dropped whilst watching Edd China, workshop diaries, he had worked on the fuel lines on a RR, but then later they removed the body from the chassis, and that was the moment I realised, I was trying making it over complicated. The fuel lines run along the top of the chassis rail!
So with Xmas coming up inquired about being able to get Doris into the boat yards workshop, with a list of jobs getting longer, fuel system, split the middle diff as when rebuilt a cog/sprocket is the wrong way around and it means both rear axles are locked, the cog/sprocket allows one axle or both, but being fitted the wrong way around will not free both axles, add brake fluid etc.
With the car being towed into the workshop by the Disco on Wednesday, spent the rest of the day feeding the main fuel line, to the engine bay making pipes for the pump connection, fitting filters, pump etc.
Come away really happy. Eager for next day.
What had also happened was a friend who we had met up with boxing day (Sunday) told us she had tested positive to Covid on the Tuesday, both the wife and I done the tests both negative, Wednesday as above, Thursday wife tested positive but I was still clear, but had to do some odd jobs but and was unable to get into the workshop, Friday Morning I tested positive.
So we have had to take Doris out of the workshop and back to the shed so with all the best plans!! like so many other people, plans screwed.
