I have a very amateurish wood bothering question that I think I know the answer to but thought I’d check. I’m fitting a new door frame and there is a lip on the internal edge (see photo). Is this there simply so that you don’t need to mortise the hinges? Just cut the lip away?

Yes the stop is on the right, complete with groove to fit a weather strip. The lip is on both jambs and the head but not on the threshold/sill (I think I’ve used the correct terminology!). I thought nothing of it at first but then had one of those “what am I missing?” moments….

Normally on external frames you get a small 10mm Chanel close to the stops. I assume as a water Chanel to direct it down on the right side of the metal weatherbar.

So I’ve spoken to XL Joinery and they confirmed what I suspected; the lip is there so that hinges, strike plates etc. don’t require mortising. Hmmm….
Agreed, however I suppose the question is how often will you see them? With the door closed you’d never know. I can see the benefit of this design if you need to get lots of doors hung quickly (or can’t use a chisel!) but I wouldn’t have gone with it by choice.

ive seen them but think the tops are wrong for there intended purpose
there a flush fit hinge but have an interesting seal arrangement external door seal and an internal seal can be fitted creating a thermal bridge
@eLuSiVeMiTe you know the double hinge fitted to swing fire doors
thats what i presume is fitted but i havent had the time to truly look at that type of frame or hinge is fitted
otherwise you would never open that door fully due to that lip being on it

I'm not a joiner or whatever, but I thought the reason to cut in hinges is to support them and keep them lined up, that's why hinges should be tight in their pockets. they re just relying on the screws and that little lip. Seems a bit odd to me?

I agree but then again people use flush hinges without issue. I'm sure it will work, but really it has the feel of a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, to me anyway (and judging by the responses every other poster on this thread!).....

Unfortunately there's a lot of chippies in my trade that struggle with the simplest of tasks manually.
Only ever chopped hinges in with a jig. Only ever used lock jigs.
Can't get a hinge/lock jig on a pre rebated frame.
I bought a lock jig last month. (haven't used it yet) because door construction is so poor these days the likelyhood of splitting the door is high.
Usually clamp a bit of wood either side when drilling/chiseling out mortices so thought I'd give the jig a go.
Il grab a skeleton hinge jig as well. Useful if your doing a whole house
I can't picture what you mean. The lip won't interfere any more than the edge of a normal frame as far as I can tell?
I'll be honest I don't find it that difficult.... The caveat to that is that I'm never in a hurry/under pressure and I have sharp chisels! I also find my die grinder and (more often) my power file useful for cleaning out mortises. Make no mistake though I'm definitely an amateur!
It's the exact same thickness as the hinge leaf though so won't make any difference(?). It's effectively the same as having a traditional mortised hinge; that's the whole point of it.
