Don't think I should have done this

I have a Boxford 160 TCL lathe, been in storage for ages and it's one of those projects I keep meaning to start but other things get in the way.

I listed it on eBay and it's had quite a bit of interest but the last 3 or 4 days I have been keeping myself awake thinking it's a bad idea to let it go but hate it when people pull things from auctions.

So do I leave it to sell or end the auction and keep it.


I don't have a specific need but know I will not get another for what I paid for this one

It will come in handy even if you never use it.
I rarely use my lathe but on the odd occasion I do its been well worth the £160 it owes me and it will always hold its price

Regrets before you sell are usually bigger regrets after you sell.

Probably boils down to:

How much free time you have in future years and would that time be good for restoring it?

Do you need the storage back?

Will the money come in handy?

In brutal honesty will you ever use it?

While hindsight can be a bitter pill, you should have thought more carefully before you put it up for auction.

Already have a Harrison M300, but the Boxford 160 is a small CNC lathe, needs converting to modern CNC control but it's essentially all there, even has a tool turret

I can see your point, I've been on the receiving end of listings that looked like I was going to win at a good price only for the seller to pull the listing and it's bloody annoying but if I was having second thoughts I'd still pull a listing myself, @indy4x I'd pull it, you can always re-list it later if you really decide that you don't need it but you'll probably never find another as good as cheap again. If another better one comes along at a irresistible price you can always flog yours then.

any chance you could list on here sell to someone local for a fair price on the basis you can use it on the very odd times when you need it ?

that way you get your money back in your pocket and space and poss the use of the mechine if you would only use it on the odd times

@cumbriasteve in future years hopefully loads, space isn't a huge issue as it's only little but yes if I'm feeling iffy about letting it go now it's too late once it's gone

I think the frustration for me when peeps pull eBay listings is that they have probably sold it off the site to avoid paying eBay fees. In this case it's more about 2nd thoughts, not worries about eBay fees as it was listed using an offer where the max selling fee is £3-

I wouldn't part with my myford even though have a bigger lathe . much nicer making small parts on it than a larger lump

It's annoying when a listing gets cancelled but I wouldn't hesitate to do it myself.

I wouldnt worry about shifting that Boxford out, unless you are very good at fitting new stepper motors & electronics.
A lot of those ran off BBc micro computers & the electronics are hopelessly obsolete. Boxford stopped supporting most of them years ago. In schools they were mostly used with plastics & alloy.
I had A Boxford 125 training Lathe, A 260VMC & a Denford starturn, all got junked by the college, the VMC got dropped by the caretakers before i could get to it. The Boxford got broken for bits & the Denford sold for good money.
Out of interest there was a good market for the original software, pity as boxes of drives & discs all went in the skip before i could rescue it!

was going to suggest someone bids on it for you so you dont lose face by ending early and upsetting others, but youd get landed with the fee. sod it, just pull the listing

You'll still get charged under the new agreement that came in this month but if you don't want to sell just finish it and stand to the charge. If it's the one with 6 hours left to run you've left it a bit late.

get one of the guys on here to bid so he is the highest and let the auction run and he wins it then you can muchialy agree to cancel the sale no fees

Just wack a healthy reserve on it. If it sells at least it eases the pain. If it doesn't sell.

Don't sell on eBay often. Can you change reserve mid auction?

It's a mere annoyance, not the end of the world. If you want to keep it, pull the listing.
