Dont laugh at my tool

Hi all site looks great.
Just bought my first arc welder never done it before,but enjoyed using it for the first time apart from,
1,kept cutting out after 3 min then have to wait 30 min for reset
2,rods sticking not all the time but now and again.

Its a einhell 151/2 100 amp,i had it set on full and was using 6013 rods,any help is help needed.

Hi the number on the rods are E50 -E6013

I take it these rods came with the welder?

I'd look for some name brand 2mm 6013 rods to use. They will start easier and run better.

Forgot to say my first project is boxing in my small car trailer,i have the frame made up and welded up just need to solve them anoying problems

No i bought the rods the guy in the shop said ere theyll do
So is what you are saying a smaller rod will stop the welder cutting out as much and stop sticking

Once youve got the hang of starting without sticking it wont cut out as quick.
When they stick it overloads the transformer and it gets hot more quickly.

Excuse me for being stupid but what advantage would i have by using smaller rods i presume it would put less load on the machine

Yes smaller rods will run at a lower current.

What size you you have? Can you measure them (the diameter of the metal core, not including the flux.)

Just done that 3mm

The problem with rods smaller then 3.2mm is there is more slag then metal. Very hard to prevent slag inclusions. Cheap no-name rods are useless. Stick with a well known brand like ESAB, Licoln, Hobart. They will be more expensive but will be easier to use.

Just had a look again at intsruction book,

1.6 mm 40a
2.0 mm 40-80a
2.5 mm 60-100a

So the max i should use is 2.5 but by what i have been told on here 2.0mm sounds the best.

Brands could be a problem here in Romania the no 1 brand here is Mechel.

Years ago I had a stick welder that would cut out at a stern look. I put a small 240V fan in the casing and it never tripped out again.

Thanks for the tip but that would void my warranty but hey if it made the thing work better what the hell

put a desk fan blowing into when welding might help. Or take back under warranty and get something better

Hi all thought i would report back,got some 2.5mm rods they were the smallest i could get worked perfect machine only cut out once.

2.5mm is a good size, that is what I use most often.

so possibly 3.2mm? these are definatly too big i would go for a 2.5mm rutile rod, iv got on well with nexus rods and they are ridiculously cheap so give them a try.
The larger the rod the more power it needs to burn, the more power you are using the quicker your welding set will heat up and then the thermal cut out will come into play.
