Ebay has been falling out of favour with me for a while now, sold quite a bit of stuff on there recently, made an OK amount of money on it and apart from one issue with an item (turned out to be my fault with incorrect postage) all was well.

Got the invoice for their fees, had a look and they're charging final value fees on the postage amount now too granted it's a while since I've sold on there but they never used to do it on the postage, then of course paypal have their slice of the pie too

They have been doing it for a while now.

They've been doing that for centuries. After sellers listed stuff as a buy it now for 1p and £75 P&P. And Paypal are providing you a service, why shouldn't you pay for it?

But Ebay and Paypal are the villains of course.

At least you don't often see items selling for 99p 'buy it now' now with £20 postage to get out of paying commission. I mainly only buy on Ebay but do use it a lot, I can't think of anywhere else you can find almost anything in one place and I don't think Amazon usually come anywhere near for price.

They've been doing this for at least four years. I understand your frustration.

If you’ve some valuable stuff to sell it’s worth waiting for the opportunity to sell with £1 final value fees, which they usually offer over a weekend to selected people: you get offered the chance but I don’t know what the criteria are for this. If you do it once or twice you get offered it again more often.

It's probably for people who have sold a lot in the past. Offerred as a carrot to encourage you to sell. I get them frequently. I've sold on there for nearly 20 years, but not very much in the last few.

Fair do's, seems like I'm way behind the times on this it is a while since I sold on there. They do offer a service and I don't mind paying for a service but when there are free alternatives and they offer pretty much zero seller protection it seems like a very expensive service.

I had the first one of these a few years back, sold a bit of machinery for just under a grand - saved £90 on the fees
I still get the £1 listing offer on a regular basis.

I think for average bits and pieces it is expensive. But, if you have something that's a bit rare, that's when it comes into its own. You get a world-wide audience and the likelihood of getting a much higher price then, say Gumtree or FB Marketplace.

Sold my old Zt on there recently, cost me a fair bit between ebay and paypal fees, but what's the alternative - a..sebook?

I will happily use eBay for stuff circa £20 that otherwise belongs in the bin. How else are you going to sell it? Car boot is great but I bet even with fees, eBay has lower overheads. I stick a few percent on postage to cover the excess fee.

For bigger stuff like say a compressor that's "worth" £150, I'll stick it on eBay for £200.

Items are only "worth" what you can sell them for and eBay puts it in front of everyone. Nobody scans classified ads, FaceBook is a bear market and many other PreLoved or Shpok sites are infested with scammers with no protection.

my problem with paying fees on postage is when I sell a vintage motorcycle part to someone in Australia, the shipping with insurance can easily be a lot more than the item, say a £20.00 camshaft and £50.00 airfreight, £2.00 fees on the cam, £5.00 on the shipping, not much left for me.....

You have to factor it in. I always do. If someone the other side of the world needs something badly enough they have to swallow the cost.
