dolly thing....

I wanted something i can chuck my engines on and gearboxes, and anything heavy really, and move them about in the workshop.

So made this dolly thingy today, just need to grab some wood now. i know it's a pretty basic thing really but turned out ok and im pleased with it

That's just like the one I found near a local supermarket, they wheel bread trays round on them you know

i found one in one of the empty buildings on our industrial estate with the letters s p a r and some other lettering. it fitted under my golf perfectly i undid the subframe bolts and the engine box driveshafts and hubs just slid out the front end

Very useful things, we have a few made from 100x50 box section.
Regularly used on site in pairs for moving stair flights, big beams and similar stuff, usually when a crane/forklift etc cant get to lift.
I think the record stands at 2t on one dolly.
The nylon castors tend to deform under heavy load then stay wobbly. The cast steel ones are the dogs.

It looks like you cheated like we do and weld the castors on. Drilling and bolting all seems too fidly when you have a mig torch at hand

it cant have belonged to a chain of small retail shopping outlets as it was found in a unit that belonged to a building company
either way i wish i had took the second one instead of going back for it when i could have done with it to find that the pikeys had had it away
honestly you cant try to nick anything these days without finding someone has nicked it first

works perfectly if u want to stop it fast . thats what gravel traps do

yeh cheated abit sticking the castors on haha. Have no decent drill bits at the mo, something i really do need to invest in!!

If you get a decent weight of engine on that the hook eyes wont save you from the gravel hole pixies that strike.

Sheets of osb/steel/whatever are your friend there... Enough sheets to be able to put one underneath, and be moving one along from the back to the front as it moves.

I watched someone use plasterboard once, he gave me some long speech about how although it was weak it would disperse the weight and spread the loading even when I pointed out the truck would impose 4 point loads, then he rolled the pallet truck onto it carrying the machine and... it just punched 4 holes in it corresponding to where the wheels were and sank. We didnt laugh much

I used the base of an old MIG welder for a dolly.

Works fine with engines etc!
