Spray at 20v'll never happen, surely? I'll bet Sparkles only gets spray at 23-24 volts cos she's using a fancy weld plant.

My big ole mig's won't go into spray much under 30v, although it's also a product of wire dia and gas type. At 30v I'm all globular and spattery. I've no idea about amps as it's too much trouble to look at the ammeter while I'm welding.

Knoba's thing sounds like spray, but using spray on 1.2mm steel would be a challenge! I reckon he's just welding at higher volts than a sensible person might, has adapted his travel speed to suit, and found that it works!

24,6 volts to be precisely.... and fancy? mwoh...

I've welded thin things doing what he is doing.
You use settings for about 2-3 the thickness of the metal, and move the torch about 2-3 times as fast.
The welder settings have to be just right and you have to move at a consistent speed.
You can't really control the weld puddle,all you can do is move the torch along the seam.
Sort of an automated way of welding,because you are depending on the machine to deliver the wire and power.

That is correct; I've tried something new, discovered it works and am looking for information on it, but would like to know what the technique is called.

Lol.... yes, i think they are! If you go too slow you'll drop back into dip, and if you go too fast you'll get into globular....

a) how accurate is the measurement, a cheap set could be way out (but it could be either way)
b) the composition of the steel makes a difference.

I find it astounding that such a hugely regulated & technical field (welding) has no name for this technique...

If someone was looking for more information, on alternative settings that may be used, they may well come up short, on both counts.

Maybe there is an opportunity here... for example: to invent a name (or hold some preliminary research) for the technique, that would officially credit this forum as the original source...

• wire feed speed - 7 m/min
• amperage range - 110 Amps
• torch travel speed - fast

On the settings I used, compared to Millers', the benefits are; faster job, excellent penetration, flatter weld beads, less dressing (incl. consumables), and uses less gas.

My primary motivation, for experimenting here, was to reduce distortion in the panels, & a faster job time. The other benefits came as a result of this!

Tell me though, how do you know you're using 110A? Voltage is a more useful thing to work by, as that's what you set on a MIG. The set looks after the amps side of things (there are exceptions with some modern machines, up to a point).

1.0 mm wire, and a looooot of Argon! 92% Argon with 8% Co2 (flowrate 18lpm)

Al, it's an Oerlikon citowave with a lot of whistles and bells.....so i guess it would be fairly accurate...

...I'm now waiting for somebody to tell me it doesn't work that way.

It doesn't work that way!

The power settings control the voltage, you could have it on level 6 but with small diameter wire and a very low feed speed and you'd be nowhere near half power.
The only way to be certain what amps you're running at is to have an ammeter on the machine, other than that it's down to good judgement though a pro welder should know how to set his/her machine up for a specified current, i.e. X voltage and Y wire speed.
Arc length also has a bearing on it, short arc length (wire stickout) will raise the current, longer arc length will lower it.
