I assume youve seen one of these beast before then.Looks like the con-rod is a little bent, but the cross-head looks OK.

hairdryerAye, worked on lots of similar machines, but never come across a bend like that. There has been some serious power to do that, one of our larger electric motors was 23,000 HP,
what wattage was that motor im guessing around18 kw ?After an overhaul or bearing change etc, we had to ring the power station to tell them when we were ready for a test run, only allowed 1 or 2 starts an hour, It used to take an age to come to rest after a solo test run.

whoops just did my calculation again and realise I read the display wrong I put 18kwThanks Robotstar, So that is getting on for nearly 18Mw (isn't it)
Not sure about a Wartsila, but the 900mm bore 9 cylinder I worked on as a cadet was producing about 6000 bhp per pot at full power.Aye, worked on lots of similar machines, but never come across a bend like that. I it was a ship, wonder if the Captain felt it on the other end of the ship? What the HECK was that?..................
Would that have been a sulzer RND 90 per chance, size and power sounds about right. Fond memories, of tightening tappets when running at 20 rpm, hangovers from hell and dusky maidens in brazil. I was once a cadet too!Not sure about a Wartsila, but the 900mm bore 9 cylinder I worked on as a cadet was producing about 6000 bhp per pot at full power.
Zim boxboat crewed by Zodiac; interesting experience but my primary learning point was that I never wanted to work on another container ship.
I Worked for Sulzer and MAN, Great machines,
This is 8 years ago now, the trend then and now is bigger, bigger, bigger; I was uncomfortable with the number of potential single-point failures there were in the ship's systems and design and the boat I was on was about average then at 4500 TEU, i don't imagine things have changed since. In the absence of any ability to influence the design of them I can only choose to not work on them.Guess you must be younger than me, In my day zim line was all foreign flag, and the use of manning / front companies was only just starting out. i also cant imagine rattling from container terminal to container terminal for 12 hour discharges much fun either.
