Does anyone have access to/own a Harrison Horizontal Mill.

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a Harrison Horizontal/Vertical Mill in a machinery auction, but the horizontal arbor bearing support bracket is missing, does anyone have access to the item that they could measure or possibly loan me while i make one......

@zzr1200 I can't help with regards this but I would consider (given your location) seeking out the local foundry and see if they can cast one using the other as a pattern.
I have considered doing this for the elliot omnimill but getting the arbors is also so hard that it seems futile. I think there is a collection of owners on here hopefully someone can step forward to your help.

If the arbors are 30INT I would give serious consideration to butchering a standard holder and shrinking it onto a mandrel to create an arbor.

@Pete. early models of the omnimill have 3mt later ones have 30INT type'B' thankfully I have all the bits for mine.
But it's one of those bits that is always getting seperated from machine

I need the measurements of the arbor support bracket in the picture below.

Mainly the distance between the bottom of the dovetail to the centre of the bearing needs to be spot on.

Plus the general approx dimensions of the height, width and the 2 depth measurements.

While I can measure it you don't really need measurements. You'd be better off making it on your machine and using the location of the spindle to accurately create the centre. The rest really don't matter that much.

Clean and lubricate the overarm so that it slides easily.

Clamp a suitable size piece of metal to the table long end facing the spindle. Bore through for the clamp (clamps are identical to the ones that clamp the overarm, you can duplicate them or do something different). Turn 90 degrees with the block overhanging the back. Face it off using a facemill in the horizontal spindle then cut the dovetail.

Mount it to the overarm with a suitable centre drill in the horizontal. Slide the overarm in until the centre drill marks the block.

Remount in the vertical and bore an appropriate hole for the bearing (probably 62mm assuming you're using something like a RNA6908 needle roller bearing with a 48mm running bush).

I can tell you that the manual says it's 4 3/16" (106mm) from the centre line of the arbor to the "flat" in the centre of the overarm dovetail. The issue however is that those measurements differ (4 3/16" is 106.3525mm), given the way it's constructed however I would struggle to measure more accurately.

Anyway, I will dig mine out and see what measurements I can get for you.

I was going to say, make the part with no hole and put a centre drill in the horizontal spindle. Use the drill to spot the hole location.

+1 on make the replacement without a bore, then clock in a toolmakers button on the new support using the machine spindle and use this button as the datum to set up for boring.

It's a bit of a hodgepodge of measurements. Running bush is 48mm but then the rest appears to all be imperial. It's 5 1/2" wide at the top and tapers down after 1 1/2" to ~3 3/4". Equally it starts 2 1/4" thick for 1" then tapers down to 1 1/2" thick. Needle roller is held in place with two 1/4" thick plates which then have felt backing and locates an inner ring. The plates are 3 1/2" in diameter with a flattened bottom which brings them to 3 1/3".

I really can't measure it accurately enough to get a centre for you, you would be best off as above to make it without the hole then transfer the centre from the spindle.

I will add at this point...I've just realised there is a number stamped into it. I really hope they're not meant to be "matched" because that number certainly doesn't match the serial of mine!

Fastdruid, thank you for the measurements above at least it gives me an idea of the top depth/reduction/ to the lower thickness of the bracket.

Now a trip into Sheffield to visit a few scrap merchants and steel suppliers for a piece of blank steel...

Overarms are relatively easy to come by.
I threw one in the scrap earlier this year, as I had to buy an overarm to get a support bearing when I had my Harrison, and the arm was just taking up space.

It's probably worth mentioning that Harrison made subtle changes to their mills over the years.
The support bearing I had didn't have a flat on the bottom like @Fastdruid 's has.

The other issue is INT/BT30 horizontal arbors are no longer easy to get.
I ended up importing a couple from the US, as nobody could supply them in the UK.

Personally unless you have a real need for a horizontal mill, I wouldn't bother going to the effort of making a support bearing, and sourcing all the parts needed to actually make it useable.

I purchased the mill at an auction as a project.

I already have a Warco A2F mill, so the Harrison would be a 2nd mill, it has a vertical head, arbors and overarm the only bit missing is the arbor support bracket.

I just fancied having another small horizontal mill for keyways and other small projects, theres always the possibly it may get sold on, once sorted.

I know the seller (not personally, just a member of the same owners group) and he's picked one up now.

Best way appears to be wanted ads and/or asking sellers if they'll sell separately.
