http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21056703 says season rail fares have gone up pretty much in line with inflation between 55% and 80% since 1995 when British Rail was privatised till 2013 (when the article was written), over the same time petrol went up from 50.9p to 138.9p, even allow for today's prices at around 120p, the motorist is getting shafted compared to rail commuters.

You need to adjust your fuel costs against inflation. Look at that chart in the link I posted, it has 1995 fuel at about a relative £1 a litre (in 2014 prices so more again in 2017 prices). As I suspected, trains are not easy to compare, that info suggests that, much like petrol, season tickets have risen more or less in line with inflation but peak singles have often risen 3-4x the rate of inflation.
Add in the increase in vehicle mpg and motorists aren't doing so bad at all. Why do you think that lightweight motorcycles or even motorcycles and sidecars were so popular "back in the day", was it because fuel was super cheap and everyone enjoys a Sunday jaunt on their BSA bantam? Or because yer man couldn't afford to own and run a car so shoved his wife and child(ren) into a motorbike and sidecar to go to the market....
400m and a tank a week, yep it's costly, but meh...Maybe I'm being thick but why ?
As far as I can tell the prices for rail fares in that article are not adjusted for inflation and the fuel prices are defiantly not adjusted for inflation so surely I'm comparing like with like.Maybe your right and the motorist is better off than he used to be. To be honest with you I'm not that bothered, I'm not about to give up my car and start taking the train because I like driving too much so even if the train was loads cheaper I'd still choose to drive.

So anyway, the consensus on here is that the fuel shuts off when the accelerator is released.

Maybe your right and the motorist is better off than he used to be. To be honest with you I'm not that bothered, I'm not about to give up my car and start taking the train because I like driving too much so even if the train was loads cheaper I'd still choose to drive.
Yea, you're right the train article doesn't adjust the quoted ticket costs for inflation but nevertheless it does say that in general, season tickets have risen in line with inflation and single fares have increased much more. If you compare that with fuel, which tends to regress back to a mean, also in line with inflation, it's hard to argue motorists are worse off (in terms of fuel costs at least).
If you want clarification, plug a price per litre (or gallon!) that you remember fondly into an inflation calculator and see what the equivalent would be in today's money. Back a few months ago when fuel was brushing £1 a little, it was pretty cheap.
