Would the gas generate steam by any chance? Our oven is electric so that problem is sorted anyway!

by products of the combustion of gas is carbon monoxide and water!
I have a box of Nikko 7018's and they were utter rubbish. Could not get them to light at all. They will be returned to China in the next load of scrap.

Hope not. Carbon monoxide is deadly poisonous. Town gas contained a lot of carbon monoxide - before combusting it.

.Friend has about 12 boxes of Elga Cromarod 5.0mm 309L rods sitting over the years that he's mostly just used for the 5mm stainless rods instead of welding 
Wonder if these are worth chucking in the oven for a few hours as coating doesn't look half bad on them and like ~£100 a box.

Those rods look in great condition, I would only be drying them if I was needing to use them though. Possibly consider better storage until that time comes.
