In industrial environments, there's situations where flux-core (be that self-shield or dual-shield) or metal-core is just far more productive than MMA, which can bring costs right down... But it's a distinct skillset in its own right.
Selling flux-core to the hobby market as "gasless MIG" has probably left a lot of would-be welders frustrated and despondent, and given the flux-core process an unfair reputation.
