Do I need to weld the other side?

Hi all,

Quick question if you don't mind; when welding "legs" on to a "frame" like this do I need to bother welding the other side?

The frame will be used to support a V8 engine in the garage and will be turned the other way up so everything is in compression.

Sorry if it's yet another daft question the Stella is to blame!

For the cost of the weld versa the cost of a Vee 8, I would, belt & braces and all that.
Smart welds by the way. (so may as well do the lot)

Why blame Stella i'm sure shes very nice

Personally I would weld all round. It will be stronger if it happens to get a knock from the side with the weight on it, and if you are going to paint it you won't get rust streaks running from an open joint.

Didn't think about a side impact as I've got plenty of room, but as we all know sh*t happens so I'll take your advice and go belts 'n braces.

Mick, you could have welded opposite sides instead of adjacent, and you'd have lots more strength with the same amount of weld. If you were on a time and motion saving excercise, it might be worth going that way.

I'm not a skilled welder but find the internal angles easy to do so was wondering if I could get away with missing out the other bits, guess I will have to give it a go.

Going off at a tangent what breed of dog is shown in your avatar?

I have a couple of neapolitan mastiffs.

Hi,

just a small point...as you weld across the 'open' end of the box it'll burn back rapidly.

You need to either turn the power down a bit or pulse the trigger about one second on/off at a time.
