Do I need to use an Isolator?

Hi Chaps,

I've just repared my car door and will need to spray paint it. Its standard original paint. How can I tell if I need an Isolator coat, before the top coat? I was planning on using Cellulose paint.

I'm a bit new to this so not really sure what to use, or what works best with what. But I'm also planning on painting the rest of the car.

So any advice/pointers would be really appreciated.

Hello Dave,

it depends on what paint is on the door, cellulose will react badly with many paints so if you don't know what the paint is use an isolator.

Going off the nickname, is it a Triumph door, in which case it may be cellulose? I also see that you are in Shropshire, I'm in Oswestry and currently re- restoring my Mk 1 2000 P.I.

usualy use isolator if theres lots of coats of paint on the car or suspect bodge jobs

if its sound original paint then i would just prime and paint it

I think I will just prime and paint. If it reacts then I can use an isolator for the other panels.

Alec, Yes I'm in Shropshire, just the other side of Shrewsbury from you. And yes its a Triumph, but not as classic as your 2000, its a TR7, I can hear the readers groans from here! not everyones idea of a classic! but I like them and have done for many years.

Well a TR7 may have it's faults BUT it's a design classic. Just because something rusts like mad and isn't the most wonderful mechanically designed vehicle ever the visual design alone makes the TR7 an important historical car.

Yes Rocketman you could be right, I sort of said it light heartedly, but there are a lot of classic cars I like but they are getting rarer all the time. The TR7 did have its problems in its day though!

not sure if the original paint on the tr7 was 2k, to test put some cellulose thinner on a cloth and give a gentle rub if its 2k it wont rub off if it does come off it could well be cellulose

Snooper, thats a great idea. I will try that, but if it is 2k can I still spray cellulose on top?

Yeah no Problem if it's 2k it's better for you as the odds of a reaction are far less
