Do I need a Washer of some Sort?

Hi Guys,

I’m really new to welding, I have a Mig welder and so far I’ve done some Gasless welding just to get used to.
Now I’m starting a project and I bought all the bits and pieces for gas welding, however I have a small problem that might sound a bit stupid.
I got the Gas (Argon) Regulator and the gas pipe adaptor (from 3/8 BSP to 4mm) and they connect fine to one another, however once I open the gas it leaks out even though I screwed them tight.
Now I suppose I either need a washer or a gas tape, but I could not find a specific washer for this job, so before I get to the shop and but a dozen of random bits I would like to know if someone can help.

The leak comes from the the adapter even tho is screwed tight.

Put some soapy water on the joint to see if the gas is coming from between the hose and the hose-tail or from between the nut and hose-tail.

AFAIK those connectors rely on a concave and a convex surface sealing against each other, the threads just hold them in place and are not part of the seal.

If the leak is from between the hose and the hose-tail then cut a bit off the end and refit using a Jubilee clip.

If the leak is from between the nut and the hose-tail then undo the joint and make sure the mating surfaces are absolutely clean.

from the photo it looks like the nut is agains the other flat. there should be a ptfe washer between the two part if memory is correct

I'm not that familar with the 4mm - 3/8 BSP adaptors but from memory isn't the adaptor in the other end of the hose i.e. the pic/problem joint should be 3/8 BSP to 3/8 BSP? As said they're usually a conical seat like this

I would say that you have used the wrong inner inside the original nut You dont have any washers in seals on the conical end of the hose tail pushing into the concave on the regulator and your hosetail is too small allowing the nut to butt up to the hex on the regulator

Looks like the inner male thread coming off the regulator is too short, the 2 hexagon nuts are tight up against each other, there should be a gap between the 2 hexagons as in hotrodder's pic. You either need to get a fitting for coming off the reg with a longer thread or rectify the way I would do, sawing/filing a bit off the end of the nut that's on the hose. If doing this remember to blow all grit out of the hose and fitting when finished.
This sort of seal does not use any washers.

Thanks you for your advices, I've removed the plastic flexi pipe placed back in and used a jubilee clip and now it seems sorted.

Looks like the Oetiker type hose clamp was too big for the hose and not pulling down tight hence the jubilee clip has cured the leak.
