Just wanting to understand when a weld has fully penetrated so I have some questions
1. when you weld and turn over the piece you have welded does the heat marks show that the metal has been penetrated or is that just from the heat of welding?
2. Sometimes when I weld the mill scale comes off when wire wheeled in the shape of the weld on the back side of the piece is that showing full penetration?
3. On thicker material I have welded I don’t see any sort of heat marks or anything on the back of the piece. Does this mean there is no penetration? My understanding is that because it’s thicker material a weld won’t fully penetrate the material all the way through therefore I won’t see any real indicators of the penetration. Am I correct?
On 5mm steel I sometimes see some sort of heat marks and sometimes I don’t. Mainly in a fillet weld.
