that amazes me the amount of people the have cordless phones
that are dead in a power cut i always have one corded phone in the house no good looking for a mobile in a house full of smoke you need a exit policy like i know that phone works and the emergency ladder ladder under bed in back room other point you try breaking a double glazed window they only break if you hit them in a corner not in the middle ideally a life hammer is a good idea in a house same as a car you might only use it once but it may save your life

And keep your keys handy, or use a shoot-bolt on the door. I used to do deliveries and the number of people who couldn't open the front door quickly was amazing.

Back to DIY wiring, I re-wired my sisters first house in the early 80's (pre part P ) as the previous owner had re-wired it himself and when she plugged a 3kw fan heater in a cable under the landing started melting

Lighting - he used a bag of 1mm T&E offcuts and a bucket of choccy blocks, didn't find a cable longer than 2 metres!

Shower - 2 x 2.5mm T&E twisted together, hate to think what would have happened if 1 core broke.

Immersion heater - 2.5mm T&E from CU to upstairs then some obscure TWIN (no earth) for the run to back of house.

I can only assume because he worked for BT, he "knew" all about wiring

I lent a 'mate of a mate' an auto centrepunch about 20 years ago ("just to drill some holes in the right place"). I never got it back. It was confiscated when him and two other lads were collared helping themselves to other peoples' property in multi-storey car parks

My bro's house was formerly owned by a 'builder', some of the bodges bro has uncovered are eye-watering. Such as the cooker hob spurred-off the lounge sockets: no breaker, no fuse, no isolator, just a length of 2.5mm T&E off the back of the telly socket.
Oh, and cable runs buried in plaster that take the shortest possible route - like diagonally across the lounge wall.
