DIY Marinizing a Transit engine with VP marinizing parts Mmmm

Ok, me being me, and not a rich man by far i have thoughts on going to diesel from the petrol engines in my boat. Rather keep the petrol engines for the power as they give 260hp between them and the transit give 140hp between them ( yes thats the specs on paper )

Now i know i can get marinising kits to convert a Transit 2.5Di engine but i have the two Volvo Penta engine here with all gear etc. Also kits for the XUD Pug engines but scarce now. Also these engine fit nicely in the engine bay.

I am thinking if i can adapt the VP exhaust manifold to fit the transit head then that will work, aswell as all the coolant pipes i will need to made etc.

Manifold on the right side so same as the Transit

The head of the VP which has the middle two exhaust outlets close together as the Transit is spaced evenly. .

And once the manifold adaptor has been made it will hope fully sit in the correct place.

Weight and lack of revs, doubtful you will get the boat up on the plane without spending out on new props. I would have thought the xud a better match

Probably find that the drives are completely the wrong ratios for the Diesel engines

Yes i like the XUD but hard to find good ones now. And i just read the 2.5 will be to big so need to alter the bullhead alot but he Ford 1.8 diesel and XUD will go.


So same question stand if i used say a pair of XUD`s. if modded with the parts i have will there be any problems ?

2.5di's with a turbos will get over 140hp each :-) (they're 130stock before you turn the fuel screw up)


erm... only difference with a marine engines is the heat exchanger on the exhaust so you can pipe it out the side of the boat etc. and a sea water to coolant heat exchanger instead of a radiator?

I'd make a new manifold... it's only really a manifold inside a tank/box for coolant?

I'm trying to remember my brothers boat


I'd go with the XUD, must prefer them to the ford 1.8

I have a Citroen Berlingo 1.9D engine with all the bits, ECU etc, if you think you may need it,
It will probably end up going for scrap, not much call for them second hand.
Though I am a fair few miles from you.

All well and good doing an engine swap….but do your sums before buying / wasting time and money……..

Is there really that much different in economy to be worth the hassle for the miles, nautical or otherwise, you will do in the boat?

Especially if you aren't exactly going to be thrashing it on the throttle stops all the time.

I'd be spending the time sorting the rest of it, to get it back floating and able to be enjoyed - a mate of mine spent a long time messing about with a boat rather than using it - so in the end he had a year or two of use, rather than a decade, when a medical diagnosis proved spot-on, and now someone else is using his boat.

My tuppence worth, if you go for it: Use an engine which doesn't need an ECU. Otherwise, practice calling Mayday on the VHF...

The non-electronic XUD 1.9 turbo from Citroen Xantia (or Xsara? I get them mixed up) would be my choice, but they are hard to find as you say.

There was a zero hours NOS XUD non-turbo 1.7 on ebay recently, but only one, and a bit low on power for you. I think it was a bit over a grand, asking price.

It is a biggish job in time and money and messing about, and, as said above, think hard before you start ripping out your old motors, it might all turn into a huge headache and money pit, and your boat might unltimately be worth less dosh, if you ever want to sell her.

At the end of the day: Will the reduced fuel bills be worth it?

I sold loads of those GM V8 diesels to boatists that were bolting them into the place of a V8 petrol. They all went through the same set of issues which was gearing, diesels dont want to be on the redline whereas petrols will live their happily.There is a big difference between something thats happy at 2-2,500 rpm and one thats runs at 5000 +rpm. With the clamp down on red diesel in boats only a few weeks away I am not so sure diesel is the way to go.

Looks like the government did a last minute uturn on it, was scheduled for april of this year. Northern Ireland are still on the ban because of some tie up with southern Ireland and the eu.

The Chancellor has confirmed in the 2021 Budget that sailors and boaters will still be able to use red diesel to propel their vessels

Turbo`s are a to much to keep cool in these boats been tried and failed by many.
If i can use the one i have mite aswell instead of making one.

all i have been doing for last year, sums is what it got me here with this idea.

I am not looking at economy of the running of it, if i was i wouldnt of got this boat with these engines in lol,

I am all to well up on these projects and boats to know what can happen. this is to get the boat going quicker.

XUD Turbo is a no go. so would be just NA.

As seen the engiens are already out ready if i rebuild them.



Now this is the cheapest option to get he boat on the water but for fitting an Outboard on, i think not ha ha.

To rebuild these VP i have will be around £3k, which i had for it untill few bills apread and it went elsewhere. not happy but hey ho.

this is the cheapest option as said. as to marinise these engeins in any form will be around £3500 per engine.
