Cutting a thread into the end grain (of a dowel repair) I doubt would be very strong...the vid tests are into a cross grain ....grain direction matters with wood.

Also I don't really see a difference between screwing the bolt into threaded wood...and screwing a sleeve then a bolt into wood!

It's the thread form that makes all the diffrerence.

Ok so... my drilling jig worked a treat after I 3d printed some new bushes for it to remove any play. I made a few tests and found a 25mm beech dowel to have the strongest hold on the thread. It did eventually fail after a lot of tension was applied on the threaded rod (M16x2.0 for those interested). Whether threading it straight into the wood will be enough, I don't know.

I've since installed 50mm lengths of the 25mm beech dowel in the wall. I'm debating on whether to install threaded inserts?

Is it still adviseable to go with the ones with the coarser thread?

Or ok to go with the finer thread? It does say this is for hardwood, but seeking opinions from those more experienced.
