Ha ha, I had a long lecture from my Dad about ‘mechanical sympathy’. As a teenager and just passed my test, he let me drive whilst he was sat in passenger seat. Being ‘cool’ I had one hand on steering wheel and other resting on gear lever. He when ape telling me about the whine he could hear from a complaining gear box. Lesson learnt very quickly if you want to drive Dad’s car.

Aside from the weak diff, weak half shafts, and a tendency to bend tubes if properly hammered? Besides going imperial there’s not a whole lot of difference between a series 3 10 spline and a 200tdi 10 spline. 300 went to 24 spline which is an improvement but not what I’d call indestructible

when all you have is a 200tdi , its close enough ,,, the 200tdi was a mighty motor , they really did stand dogs abuse ,, the 300tdi was ok , but wouldnt stand a cooking .
