Disposing of oxygen bottle

Hi All

Apologies if this is covered in the forum already. I did search but couldn't find anything. I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do and if anyone has some suggestions that would be a big help.

I've been clearing out a load of building waste from my garden and have found what I assume is a welding bottle. It's quite small, about the length of my size 10 foot! Says oxygen on the front but rest of label now weathered away by rain and slugs.

It's empty and I don't need it but my local tip won't take it. I've tried looking things up on Google with not much help. Does anyone know how I get rid of this safely and properly. I appreciate there could be a charge to dispose of this. I'll accept that if that is the case. I just need rid of it!

Are you sure it's empty ?

Drill a hole in one end.
Then cut the ends off and you've converted it into scrap metal. Can't see the tip refusing that.

If its empty, it can be safely disposed of by removing the valve, by means of a pipe wrench - they are usually tight and a spanner will often slip. A pipe wrench will mash it up but get it out. It can then go in any household recycling or scrap metal bin, or it can be posted to me.

To be certain it is empty, press a blunt metal rod down the valve, pointing away from yourself and with eye protection. If theres no hiss, it is empty and safe to remove.

Ours in Norfolk will take them.

Or do what one of my neighbours did - or a passer by did...? Stick it in someone elses wheely bin.

I scrored a full camping gas 907 blue butane cylinder in my dead parents wheely bin - about this time last year. I took it out and in conversation - one of my mates wanted it for a spare exchange cylinder for his family camping trips. He was really pleased with full cylinder for nothing...

I'd suggest not drilling a hole in it, particually if theres any chance that its not empty. A sweedish pipe wrench is a much safer option.
* other pipe wrenches are available but often less successful.

Once empty, a rince with water, then cut it up to use for welding projects - good useful size.
