Dispensing 2k paint?

I bought some 2k epoxy primer.
It came in regular paint tins.
It's a PITA trying to pour it into a measuring pot, as is scooping it out with a measuring cup.

Is there some kind of "dispenser" available where I could empty the paint tin in, and then open a tap to control the flow? Or even some sort of jug with a lid and pouring spout?

I'm only mixing 100-200ml at a time, and I'm using a *lot* of cups, and making a lot of mess - I'm certain there must be *something* better than just "scooping" or "tipping"?


I've done a peremptory 'google' but fear I don't know the correct names to find what I need.

Many, many, many years ago I worked in a garage and on the paint mixing scheme the lids were replaced with a new top that was the stirrer and pour jug, the end slid over the opening if I recall

I remember those. The tops had a paddle inside, and on the outside it slid into a chain driven stirring mechanism mounted on the underneath of the shelf above. Every can got stirred before you used the ones you needed. Cutting edge at the time.

Ordered a 4l version of one of these - from t'bay.

We shall see if it's any good.

That dispenser looks handy if using paint often but for long term I imagine paint will go off much quicker.

Tins are often short and wide, and when full, thats a messy combination. Its much easier to pour once the tins half empty, or if its tall and narrow to start with. Get some spare tins and decant half out.
Thats not great for long term storage of hardener as air can make it go off quicker.

Note below I say about measuring with scales. If you use a temporary paint tin for the epoxy, at the end it will have say, 5 or 10g of paint stuck in there. Wiegh out 10g of thinners into thus spare pot and shake until well mixed. You'll need some thinner anyway, and weigh how much to get out into your mixing pot. Subtract the 10g of thinners from what you will add after and adjust the hardener quantity to match the extra epoxy.

One thing that can work is to put two peices of masking tape on the rim to make a pouring spout.

Theres a guy on YT who recommends plastic bottles with a flip up lid, but I've found thats only good for short duration, the plastic bottles easily let the solvents out and you end up with dried paint. I've got a couple that are drying out - andnwithout knowing how much was in there, or the density, its impossible to mix in the correct ratio.

I've tried syringes, plastic and glass, but they need lubrication and thinners makes them seize up, many have sillicone oil when new I believe, so best avioded. With a lathe you could turn up a metal syringe that would not seize up.

For measuing small quantities use a pair of jewlers 200g scales, its much more accurate, but you'll need to measure the density as its often not mentioned in the TDS. Larger amounts I use a 5kg kitchen scales.

For example HB 989 primer,
169g of epoxy
22.25g of hardener
23g - 46g thinners depending on 1.7mm or 1.2 nozzle size.

I'm actually 3d printing a load of 25ml ones at the moment.
Thats my "fall back" idea.
Hopefully because they have a handle, they'll be less messy than the medicine cups/plastic shot glasses I've been using.
I'd still prefer to just have a row of ?bottles? on a shelf where I could turn a tap and dispense the correct amount.

<Edit> I've just seen a picture of a "slushy" machine - that would even stir the paint!

Just use the clear mix markings on paint cups - no?

First I've heard of it. If I measure out 150ml of water, I get 150g, or as near as I can tell with the surface tension of water and parallax. Knowing the density of my primer, if I weigh out 100ml it comes up as 169g, either way its more accurate than I can judge by eye without using a finely graduated labware type measuring cylinder.

Scooping using the medicine cups is a pain, because of lack of handles - plus washing them afterwards.

The "laundry scoop" idea is marginally better, but not really what I'm after.

I'm using graduated paint cups to measure, not the scoops.

Medicine cups - as used for dispensing cough medicine, or disposable "shot glasses".
For larger amounts, I use disposable paper or plastic drinking cups.


Either way, I am wanting some sort of dispenser tap.

Maybe I'm stuck on the idea because in my previous life, liquid chemicals came out of a 25L (200L/1000L) container via a tap.

I decanted some of mine into an old coffee jar, and pour from that what I need for small mixes.

(Stir thoroughly before decanting, etc...)

I've used the big syringes to mix small amounts of primer. Not ideal but it does work.
