Yep, really. The D3 is 2.7 tonnes and doesn’t do well on coils. The air ride completely transforms it.

Good plate. Got to be worth something to a company involved with CNC kit? Mine's a manual gearbox as well, not a bad box but does have the dual mass flywheel which may not last a good deal longer depending on how it has been abused. Never driven a coil one.
Be wary with the history on this one, MOT checks aren't great and suggest a lack of TLC, your ABS issue is not going to be helped by the fact your suspension in that corner is needing a bit of tlc and allowing the whole corner of the vehicle to wobble around, it won't just be the driveshaft that's knocking. Bits aren't particularly expensive as these things go but assume all the bushes will need replaced and the wishbones themselves along with new bolts. I think this, along with the fact it appears to be a high tax model means it should be pretty competitively priced to sell.

Ok, fair enough, I‘ve never owned a Disco, and I do agree with your above post regarding people converting them to coils which is unnecessary as the air system is not exactly difficult to maintain, however coils are not going to be unreliable even if they aren’t as comfortable.
It‘s the same age as my X5, Think I’m paying £640 tax, just because it doesn’t have a DPF, definitely something to consider if this applies here.

I'd start by high pressure hosing it, especially the wheels, I've had a few vehicles throw up ABS issues driving through muddy puddles, just a thought, and MOT it, in summer for this reason.

My guess if not a sensor would be corrosion on the driveshaft causing the reluctor ring to expand out of shape, Ive had this before.

As already said by others, run away from a D3 on springs. These need the air suspension it makes them. Air all round as well not just on rear like most D2. Smooth ride and using the air to lower and raise vehicle height makes trailer coupling much nicer.
as for auto get SWMBO to try one the six speed in the D3s is actually very nice, it also has the option to (sort of) manually shift.

Driven a coiler D3 as well as my air suspension one I had. Coiler rode so much better in my opinion didn’t crash and bang like my air sprung one, and before anyone says I’d been through every bush and shock and air bag and they all checked out. I’d snap that one up personally auto box was a headache on mine ended up replacing the rad and having to put in an independent oil cooler. Only down side is they never did the 4.4 v8 in poverty spec which I would like though the tdv6 is a good lump of looked after.
People get very upset about putting one on coils and whine a lot but sometimes you just need a car that gose and you don’t need to spend time fiddling with each evening or each weekend. Lost a lot of business as I spent it fixing D3 air suspension and gearbox problems always was a new and different problem as well, probably lost me £10000 in jobs and cost me a fair whack in parts too. Old man emu do good springs for them. In fairness it was a 200000 mile car but you know still like some element of reliability and the coiler was factory and a similar milage.

Wheel bearing, do not buy a cheap on as you will be doing the job again in 15k.

06 is 630 rfl, way way better car than the d2, budget for a proper code reader, not a generic obd reader which will not touch the sides on a modern car, GAP IID is the best and the icarsoft one for about 140 also read all the same systems but will not programme.

Like all old land rovers they can and do look great on the outside, the underneath on the other hand is getting to be an issue on older d3, sills being the main thing as they hide under the plastic covers which run full length.

We've decided not to bother with it.
No service history after 70k, no evidence of the timing belt ever having been replaced, plus the cv joint/wheel bearing issue.
Sorting all that lot with a replacement oil pump and everything else that ought to be done at the same time will probably add another £1k on top so it's just not worth it.
Shame as it ticked all SWMBO's boxes.

SWMBO was the same when we met, then many years of my auto box motors and her getting her first D2 and now she won’t consider a manual for the 4x4 in our world.
just buy an auto and don’t tell her

Anything on an 06 plate or newer is going to be in the £600 tax band
I spent ages looking for a good 55 plate D3 with reasonable miles, service history and looked after. Field was narrowed as I wanted an SE. After travelling a few hundred miles looking I ended up with an 06 plate SE and just lived with the road tax costs
That was back in 2018, a 55 plate D3 is now going to be 18 yrs old so so spring chicken, if I was doing it again I'd be looking at a late D3, nearly did earlier this year but Bought an 09 plate Jeep GC Overland instead
Bought mine with 80k on the clock, fair bit of history and put 50k on it during 3 years of ownership and yes it did cost me in parts. TBH, nothing you wouldn't expect for something of that age, weight and mileage
It had
2x front air suspension units
1x front wheel bearing
Auxiliary belt idler pullies
Alternator
Discs and pads, took the opportunity to upgrade to V8 brakes all round
Rest was just servicing and it never left me stranded
Specifically wanted an SE, it doesn't have sunroofs but has most of the HSE toys like info screen, heated front screen etc
But, despite having no sunroof, it did have a water leak, easy fix, under the plastic strips that run along the roof is a spot welded seam, quick sqidge of sealer and it was sorted

Tax is £675 now.
She's now looking at the Freelander 2.
I looked at Freelander 2 as a replacement for my Freelander1, during research there were a lot of comments about the Haldex unit, Land Rover don't have a service schedule for them, but replacing the oil every couple of years is good for them.
Interesting as saving on the tax was negated for me as the commercial was more expensive for insurance
