Different schools of thought:
1. Disconnect battery and you prevent a fire cause by melting through a hot wire. It then leaves the line floating open to surges.
2. Leave connected an the batt protects against surges.
3. Disconnect and short +/- leads together.
The main thing is to connect the work lead as close to possible to what your are welding.
An example would be connecting the work lead to the frame and welding the exhaust. Then you would likely burn out the ECU by spikes induced through the oxy sensor.

One of my neighbours was welding up and old cavalier years ago, left the battery connected and the car in gear. A cracked fuel line caused a small fire underneath, shorted the starter, the car proceeded to drive itself across a couple of gardens just under starter power, total write-off due to fire damage! I was at work and missed all the 'fun'

that reminds me of replacing a clutch on a tractor. put it in gear and flick the starter to get the two halves back together. i always remembered to keep the stop control out, but have heard of some that have'nt and the tractor drives of on it's own
I got one o them. Its got a led so you know its got good connections rather than sitting there doing nothing.
For what it cost, it might be placebo but I clip it on anyway. Ive had it years now and I reckon Ive saved its cost in time saved taking battery leads off or lost sleep from paranoia. Ive never damaged any electrics welding stuff up in that period.

........never disconnected a battery since ,not had a problem yetCoincidental but my battery is disconnected at moment, mainly to reset the ECU back to 80% of its mapping, the other 20% is learnt over the next 30 mile.
Welding down pipe off the car but did tack the flexi on car last year no probs.
