Must admit I haven't tried a turbo D series but a mate had a Perkins 4.203 non turbo & that was very good at snapping half shafts and destroying overdrives.
You're worried about a replacement engine on a Disco? I won't show you the pictures and repair bills of my uncles.
Basically a complete rear end, front inner wings, rear inner wings, boot floor, battery tray, scuttle, head light areas, both complete sills, and drivers footwell. Thats what wanted doing for the MOT, but next year, it will end up requiring passenger footwell, front cross member, rear cross member and possibly more.
An engine being replaced is nothing. 200k on an engine is nothing.
My 300tdi manual was £1k, a couple of years back. It had 69k on the clock, and holes big enough to fit your fist through in the boot floor.
Im soon to be on the look out for another MOT failure disco at around £500. Plan is to take as many spares as possible from it, and the 300tdi.
Weigh in whatever is left of the shell, and then start looking for a tax exempt series without an engine.
also usefull to tell if it actualy has had that new clutch
None of the 300s had an ecu however all autos and from 97 onwards for manuals they had a fly by wire throttle, since they're after an auto they'll be stuck with the extra electronicsIt depends how recent the engines are, I try and stick with the non-ECU variants (although failed miserably with the Range Rover). Working on those is a doddle (except for the water pump bolts that are steel going through an ally housing into a cast iron block....)
The other big problem (only happens when you are changing a disco engine) is the bolt at the very top of the bell-housing (an absolute sod to remove and as a result very rarely gets replaced!) It's one way of telling if the engine has been out!

In that case I'm wrong, now you say it the egr control does sound familiar, I always associate the td5 with being the first diesel to have an ecu and the 300 with being more mechanical but I've never really looked much into the electronics side of the later 300sI'm sorry, but I must partially disagree with harrb954, the later 300TDi Discos had ECUs, from about 1997 onwards and much more than just an electronic throttle, it was to do with the control of the EGR.
Me tooSounds a bit like the bottom bolt on a Mini bellhousing, a pig to get out so no-one bothers putting it back after a clutch change, been there, done that
I always seem to get 2 opinions on them ... their either workhorses or unreliable rust buckets ..
Got the to the point where I'm just gonna buy one and take the risk
