I bought a Gateros kit to plate a range of parts for my 450 engine, but the yellow passivation colour is not what I hoped for. EU rule changes mean that they have changed the formulation for the yellow passivation, this leads to a different effect to the traditional yellow colour. There are a lot more iridescent colours in the new finish.
From what I can work out, traditional passivation used a solution of sodium dichromate, sulphuric acid and water. The new solution uses AMMONIUM BIFLUORIDE, SELENIUM DIOXIDE, nitric acid and water.
Here is my first try on a fuel line.
My set up is, citric acid for derusting, caustic solution for degreasing, proprietary acid pickle for activation (I think they can't now supply hydrochloric acid), a standard plating solution and the passivation described above (it's also odd the the yellow passivation solution is actually blue).
In the plating solution.
It seemed to plate fairly well.
A lot of "pinks" after passivation.
I have now ordered some sodium dichromate from Russia but it will take a while to get here.
Anyone know of a good uk supplier, the only one I found was here but is £45 for 500g.
