Sounds like my 90, are you sure your friend wasn't buying a land rover?
We have a 2006 galaxy with the 130hp engine probably as the op's potential, 200k and we had it since it was 6k on the odometer and belonged to hertz and its been ok apart from the dealer doing some jobs when the newness was still on it and them being idiots.
The motor is strong, but I don't see how the tube would come out to change the apparent level without being snapped from the fitting that holds it into the crankcase. The top cover is just a plastic dress cover designed to cut down on noise and give the oil somewhere annoying to get stuck and stink when you miss the filler hole because its right under the lip of the bodyshell, and has a foam/rubbery bit where the dipstick passes through it. I would give it a miss because even if this has happened, the owners dont care enough to know its doing this and could have ran it dry as a result.
Our's does use oil in use, not heavily and it always has done but if your not careful it could get that low with inattention.
The other issues with galaxy's are the diff and central spline wearing out and stripping out. There's some company does a modified design uprated part and its fit and forget then.
I too would just find another one for sale though, there are plenty of them about.

I looked at an L200 last year, the seller said it had a very slight oil leak. Got under he truck and the bottom half of the engine was absolutely spotless. Was gleaming. The suspension on the drivers side was coated in oil, really thick. We walked. There is always a better motor with your name on it
WAS SO ABSORBED with rust issues that forgot until last minute.
you've assumed the wrong conclusion ,my absorption issues resulted from the other rusty ones i'd examined ,this was a good 'un in that area.
