Diode? Identification

We have a Kenwood Chef A901, which is older than I am, and it’s decided to go the same way as another the wife had a few years back which she left out for the binmen, much to my annoyance.

Anyway, this one has sentimental value, with it previously belonging to her Grandmother and then her Mother and has now been passed down to her.

Sadly, it decided to let out the magic smoke over the weekend, so I swooped in and popped it in my shed, where I promptly stripped it down to reveal a blown capacitor, and this, what I think is a diode that has seen better days.

Is there a fools guide to markings, so I can buy a spare of three?

Resistor colour code,
Black. 0
Brown 1
Red 2
Orange 3
Yellow 4
Green. 5
Blue 6
Violet 7
Grey 8
White 9
Usually 1st colour is a number , 2nd same last is number of zeros, it's been a long time but google will confirm , iirc diodes may be black and silver

Need a ruler for scale to get some idea of the wattage.
You can meter it to find out if it needs replacing.

In which case 56 Ohms. From the description "A90156r 2W 5% 56r 15mm length 5mm diameter resister 5 6 OHM". Should be a lot cheaper than £4.20. The 2 watts is a minimum rating, you can go higher if needs be.

Yes buying resistors singly is always expensive, there are lots of repair kits about if the OP needs to identify the capacitor there will probably be someone selling a kit of all the bits, worth a look if you are not 100% with the values.
Rapid Electronics are often good for small component orders.

There are circuit diagrams on the net, finding your model will not take long.

So it will allow the OP to find the value and wattage. But also allow The OP to trace the fault why the component failed.

There might be a thermal fuse as well.

Ebay have a small kit of parts and it's worth replacing the parts in the kit because the triac may look ok but be short. Check the brushes too, just in case they've worn so low that they are arcing. The resistor would have burnt for a reason and acted like a fuse, so it may be the result but not the cause. Just type in Kenwood a901 into the search.

I was trying to remember back i have worked on a few, if this one is in the 3rd generation of the family it may well be pre triac? i can't think how the speed was regulated on the early models. Has anyone found a Kenwood improvements and alterations through the ages web page?

There’s no doubt it needs replacing it’s in two pieces.

There’s a capacitor 0.1uF that’s split it’s sides also, so I believe this to be part of the cause.

I’ll probably end up purchasing a kit from eBay, or sourcing my own and replacing the lot at the same time.

I learnt the colour code 50 years back , the memnonic wasn't very PC and isn't repeatable because of the lack of virgins.

I've repaired a few Kenwoods. Currently have 3 of them and one is a 901 and a KM series which uses the same attachments. I use the repair kits from ebay with the resistor, capacitor and triac and a set of new brushes not had any problems with them. There is a firm selling a complete updated motor and controller for about £80 which is higher wattage and more torque than the original
