I have just bought a 25L drum of Supercool EP Semi-synthetic soluble metal cutting fluid but there was no paperwork mentioning the recommended dilution ratio. Another make I wad going to buy from Cromwells quoted 14:1 Is that a standard figure or do brands differ?

It not uncommon when you buy a coolant the the most important bit of info you need is the dilution and its always missing, along with health and safety data sheets.
A lot of manufactures have now changed with the times and quote a % dilution as its a lot easy to work with. Normal range of dilutions are 5 to 10%. This could vary pending manufacturer coolant type etc. 10 being a very strong mix for harder working applications like a lot of 316 stainless work or harder to work steels and other higher end materials, but you really need not be concerned with those.
To be totally safe you really need the right info from the supplier and not speculation or guess work you often get in forums.

I aim for 7%, and check with a refractometer and adjust accordingly. Grinding can go down to 5% minimum, heavy turning up to 9%:

My Castrol Hysol Excel has a refractive index of 1.05 so you multiply the Brix reading by 1.05 to get the percentage soluble oil in solution.

I found that data sheet but would not post it because it does not say who its made by therefore could be inaccurate. If the coolant I linked to that on ebay is what p0689109 has bought it may well be different.
There are so many unbranded coolants about these days and many with very similar names and possibly some have the same name. Reason is, over the years of the internet many people have bought bigger 210ltr barrels then decanted and flogged it off in smaller quantities to the layman in the street. The fact is you really don't know what it is or where it originated from.
Like that ebay guy i linked, the brand is apparently a very corny sounding 'well sharp' So it could be fair to say that's been decanted from a bigger barrel and trying to sell under his own brand name, well his ebay user gives that away.
So ultimately he needs the info from source to be safe.
