people do love digital displays, All most panel meters are just voltmeters that measure voltage across a shunt anyway be they digital or analogue and yes it is easyer to write wound 238.97 of a digital display and be smug thinking your accurate but there be a margin of error in the meter so on a welder really you may as well just call it 240.
theers a muppet at work that go to the other end of the workshop to get a pair of digital verneers because there more accurate, they arn't there actually next to useless but for someone that may as well be blind and cant grasp how to use verneers, they have a sort of use. they are easy but not accurate

A gas meter.What about when welding with a gas torch? Which type of meter would you need for that?

Analogue displays are becoming Increasingly rare, on most new modern machines Digital displays seem to be the standard.
with reference to some of the comments about calibration, Digital in regard to welding machines means different things, you can have analogue meters on a analogue machine, you can have digital meters on a analogue machine or you can have digital meters on a digital machine.
digital machines (which operate with some form or CAN Bus protocol and have software updates available) generally cannot be calibrated, they can only be validated. In essence they are either working correctly and as such will be fine. In the unlikely event that they are not falling within the tolerances allowed then it would require a hardware change of the particular shunt or whatever. When you turn the machine off and back on again they usually do a self test/calibration. They cannot be tweaked on site. But I can’t remember any time either at Lorch or at Fronius (where I was before) when a digital machine was out of calibration.
sometimes people make errors in the way they try to do a validation and then say the machine is out, but when the validation is done correctly you’ll be hard pushed to find a digital machine that isn’t in.

Whats the best way of measuring welding current ?
My invertor looks to be about 10A less than whats written on the knob when I use my DC clamp meter on the cable (which to me explained why my welds were a bit cold on settings that seemed like they should be good )

This is exactly what I have done. I have a robust Murex Challenger 400 MIG that was step only but due to CE conformance I have now fitted a cali box that gives digital displays of amperage etc.
