Why?
Wifey is convinced that we can the buy junior a flat screen TV, not digital reciever to use on his playstation and not need a TV licence.

A tv of any kind is grist to the tv licensing man's mill. But you need to let him see it, and as you don't have to let him see it, the whole issue should be academic.

Nevertheless, if said tv can't receive digital tv signals and there's no analogue available, it's not a tv anymore, so again, no problem.

Why though would you buy a tv when a monitor would do?

A curious thing - see iplayer on your computer - If you watch BBC programmes on it, live, you need a license. If you wait until they're downloadable, or watchagainable, you don't.

Yes. VCR's &c count as receivers.

The salient point is that receiveing apparatus has to be installed, a telly in a box in the loft doesn't need a licence.

In theorey a telly without an aeriel connected isn't installed, but you'd be on thin ice.

Detector vans - there was a program on these a while back. General concensus was they were a sham, some detector vans didn't have any gear in the back, just a fancy aeriel on the roof!

The publicity surrounding detector vans said they could tell which room it was in and what channel you were watching. The old tellies emitted a harmonic of the line frequency on long wave, so in theorey the above could be true. Some people reckon the vans picked up the intermediate frequency from inside the set.

I suspect none of this applies to modern tellies (I think some use transistors these days, whatever next!) but I wouldn't risk it.

They can't tell the difference between colour and monochrome sets with a detector van.

TV Licensing are very aggressive.

We were in the middle of moving in to this house a few years back when a fella lets himself into the back garden and tells us he's from TV Licensing. His opening line...you don't have a TV License. ....Er, Yes we do pal. (Mrs WP had set it up the first day we moved in). He kept saying we didnt. I kept saying we did. I suggested he might like to check his his records again. He came off the phone, muttered something and went on his way. Serious attitude problem.

I bought a new telly a couple of years back from Comet or some such place. My name goes on the receipt/invoice/list so they can send me junk.
Counted 6 letters from TV Licensing telling me i didnt have a TV licence and they were going to hang me. Doesnt take a genius to work out that the license might be in a different persons name (Mrs WP). Had they bothered to check the address they would have saved themselves a bit of work. Mrs ended up ringing them to put them out of their misery.

We are after junior being able to do his weird playstation stuff, and am happy not to have 'It' watching TV constantly, if 'It' wants to watch TV, he can do it online the next day.

This stupid system has to collapse in the end. Madness, you can pay to watch satellite telly, why in hell should you pay for a licence to not watch the BBC? (rant over) even if they did get rid of the licence I would not want one.

We did try a couple of monitors with the PS but the picture goes all weird every now and again.

those cheaky chappies had duplicated my address with a typo when we moved in, I would get nasty threating letters almost weekly despite having a license...


I wrote to them once and phoned them twice to tell them there computer had cocked up but alas it was ignored...

In the end I phoned them a third time and invited there inspector around so I could shove there license up there ****, I was hung up on and received a letter threatening to inform the police over threating and abusive behavior....

I never received any further letters.. bunch of idots.....

the tv licencing sent me umpteen letters about not having a tv licence. after 5 phone calls explaining that i had one and why they thought i hadnt i gave up answering there letters another few letters of prosecution and threats arived a guy turned up whilst we were waching telly . i produced my licence showed him the other telly in second sitting room . lol he said wheres the licence for this one . both my tellies mate didnt they update the records and take notice what i said . its 2 houses knocked in to one so sling your hook and update the records

Years ago for a whole year we received letters from the TV licensing authority telling us that we did not have a TV license for number 15 ***** street and they were addressed to number 19 where we actually lived. I replied once by letter explaining I live at number 19 not 15 and received an apology then received 12 more monthly warnings. I phoned once and asked them to stop sending me letters but they carried on so I ignored them and they eventually stopped.

There is no such thing as the "van".
It was driven about years ago to scaremonger people into paying for it.

I was watchin a documentary on it a few months back and the head of the TV licensing himself said that theres no such thing

Absolutely spot on. I've never owned a TV License in my life. If you don't ignore the TVLA they will keep hassling you. I haven't heard a thing from them in over 20 years.

BBC & digital TV... Loads of offers being advertised on brand new TV's at the mo. "The powers that be" want everyone to upgrade to the latest TV tech because VOD (video on demand) is coming in, streamed over the internet through network enabled TV's (BT will be wanting you to upgrade to fibre optic broadband for the same reason). Their reasoning is very simple... more money! ...what a surprise.

Right now, you are able to buy; a new, but not necessarily better, (3D sux) TV, & "rent" films online for a pay per view - just like hotels do. This stops piracy like lending your film to a friend. It also means the marketing companies can track your usage (as well as; Government, TVLA, BT, MGM, Ronco, etc.) and either target you with "other products & services you may be interested in" or provide the proof that can have you "fined for fraud", (which is something they haven’t figured out how to do so far) - but you'll have to pay for the equipment that enables them to do it.
