And you think a new system is going to be more secure?? It's actually getting easier to clone details that are held on "secure servers" than it's ever been. I have a paper card in my wallet that contains my details, think of the old paper driving licence and only myself and DVLA have that info, it can't be hacked,copied or cloned unless your fingers are in my pocket or DVLA give my details away, Now going digital opens up billions of gateways for my info to be copied so how does that make my personal details safer. Call me an old sceptical fool but sometimes technology takes a step backwards regarding making our lives better.

which is my point really...why do we need more. I have learnt a very valuable lesson over the last 5 years in this country of ours, anything that is rolled out for the benefit of the people is the exact opposite and only benefits the ones making the rules. We really need to wake up as a collective and think hard about the consequences of being steered in to pens "for our good"
If we stay clear of politics on this thread then maybe a healthy discussion might evolve.

Have you considered other simpler explanations for this legislation? Here's one possible explanation:

Government makes promises such as a simplified customs platform to offset some of the difficulties caused by our trade situation. Development starts but then stalls because there's a problem with cross referencing IDs across departments. A case is put forward showing why our ID solution is preventing progress, what the risks are of not fixing it, and the benefits of developing something new. The case is strong and gets buy in from politicians, and we get to where we are now. No conspiracy.

I'm 100 % to everyone on the internet having to have a verified digital ID , it would certainly reduce the numbers of cheats who use multiple ID's . & also perhaps become a verifiable way of proving identity for many other requirements . My only concern is how to prevent such a set up being hacked and because of it zillions of false confirmed ID's being offered via the dark web for nefarious purposes .

Any info would be stored on Chinese servers anyway, but the public will be daft enough to believe that could never happen because cost never overules quality and it's nice and safe on 'the cloud'

Many government services are verifying your ID in relatively insecure methods by today's standards, making it easy to falsify your identity. That's what I had in mind.

We are already digital. Government departments already have a single view of us, and we already have dozens of digital identities with varying security. The current Gov digital ID is stopping further progress due to it's architectural issues.

the gg was forced upon the people who had to sign on at dwp they didnt want it and many workers sy they had to jump through the hoops to get it

As it goes for digital info held on you and its easy to check yeah right i know mines wrong and ive already refuted it and it got refused to be changed all they offered was adding to the info not changing it all they used was someone statement and not a fact to have it recorded

And it really seems the authorities are hell bent on getting as much control as possible over tax paying law abiding citizens. We've had a glimpse of this new world during covid in my opinion, laws can be passed overnight, freedoms removed with hours notice, and many people not only went along but actively encouraged it. It's pretty scary really where things are heading.

We have real dangers up ahead, climate change, a predicted recession, rising nationalism, tensions with China may be about to tip into something worse, a new status quo for invading countries and using nukes for offensive leverage, and here we are divided and believing that the governments attempts to control a pandemic is a conspiracy.

We had a right job sorting my wife's pension because she doesn't have a picture license or a passport. In the end it had to be done over the phone and post as even though we put all her details and NI number in they could not verify her identity. We're both British born and lived here all our lives so far and 40 years at this address.

i had to relent and get the photo driving licence and renewed passport because of banks etc wanted proof of identity otherwise they wouldn't deal; with you
