I presume you already have a spring shim spacer thingy...

Do you mean the ring thing to hold the clutch fingers down? It's a special Saab tool which is no longer available. We made one out of a bucket handle, though people commonly use ht leads. This clutch has been a time consuming and expensive nightmare from start to finish. I am dreading putting it all back in. This, and the saga of the door that won't hang right, have been the two issues which have got me down in the whole restoration. If we can get the clutch in and working it will be a huge boost to the project.

That's innovative lol. We used a barbell to compress it to get the spacer ring in for a trial run. I never want to see another clutch again after this.

I didn't even realise the grease came with the clutch!

I know most LUK clutches I've unboxed haven't had any supplied

Always good to lubricate the spines to reduce drag on the clutch when it's being operated

It's not as hard as you think, just fiddly. Remember to tighten all the bolts and don't press pedal till it's bled. I'm easily distracted so engine was probably turned a dozen times to check all bolts

There is a very good account on Saabscene on how to change the clutch on a c900. He suggests cable tying the bits together which sounds like a plan.

Is that a c900 in your photo? The broken inset silver bumper trim looks familiar to any c900 owner.

I don't bother with cable tie but it's whatever works for you.
Yes a c900 rolling not so resto lol. Will get done eventually

Just to update, after a struggle, the clutch is in. The sachet of grease looks too small but in fact is plenty. Saab have a spacer ring that you put in place once the splines are compressed, which you release once both the slave cylinder and clutch are in place. You can't buy this tool now so we ended up making our own out of a 5mm strip of metal. We had tried thick cable and thick wire previously (you can see it poking out of the top in the photo) but these were obviously not thick enough.

The slave cylinder is attached with 3 hex bolts, one of which is very hard to reach. You need to cut down a hex key to get access. At this point in the operation I managed to drop the hex key which then got stuck underneath the flipping fly wheel..... . I eventually got it out by bending some old bbq tongs as the sharp prongs were thin enough to get underneath. Nightmare job, and still have to bleed it. Thanks again for the help all.

tungsten di sulphide , or sulphate , cant remember which is the way to go its used on things like BMW drive shafts the bike ones , its expensive but good , failing that a wee taste of copper slip has always done me well ,,, if your getting picky grind up a pencil lead , which is actually graphite and mix it in with the copper slip and use that . But remember you really dont need much at all.
