Diesel tunning boxes

i have a nissan pick up, tad thirsty if used in a manly way

Whats the opinions on these there plug and play magic boxes, good bad or indifferent...........

Any experience in the house, any recomendations or run a mile reviews.....

Don't use them, most of them plug into the fuel rail pressure sensor and manipulate the readings to increase fuel pressure ect...
Spend some more money and get a decent remap, the extra mpg and torque will be worth it.

I drive an old BMW 318 tds. I bought i cheap and it came with a Tunit box and running 18 psi of boost. Still pretty slow, but reliable and pulls a trailer well.
I get about 470 miles on a tank. Had it 3 1/2 years, busy running it into the ground, but its holding up remarkably well.

Don't even consider them, most of them just have a few resistors that fool the ecu into adding more fuel & boost across the board. At best they will increase fuel consumption, at worst will lead to a knackered engine!

Spend the money on an engine remap. I got my 406 done for £120 and it's the best money I've spent on the car. BHP & torque are up by 15%, fuel consumption down by 10% and the drive-ability up by 100% so an all round win.

What they all said. Bunch of guys on the L200 forum (like a Navara, but better ) have tried both "tuning boxes" and remaps, and the remap is by far the best solution.

One of the guys has 210BHP out of his (it started as a 176BHP Barbarian) - gets 40MPG and goes like the proverbial off a greased shovel.

With remapping could you keep your power the same, improving the fuel consumption only?
Are there issues with the periodic MOT? (I think you call the compulsory car "exam" this way. In Italy is every 2 years)

I believe so - I think you tell them what you're looking to achieve and they modify to suit.

I don't recall anyone on the L200 forum saying that a remap (or even a "tuning box", to be fair) has impacted emissions / MOT. @123hotchef might be able to corroborate (or not!).

You can ask for performance or economy when having a remap.
If you choose the economy map then you'll still see an increase in bhp but not a huge amount.
I've heard of people gaining 7 to 8mpg on the economy maps, usually 2 to 3mpg on performance maps but in reality you don't see the mpg in pcr ease as you tend to boot it more as the torque increase is addictive.
I've had loads of cars mapped for performance, just don't go mad with the torque increase as it can lead to clutch failure but keep it sensible and you'll not look back.

Only experience I have is with add on tuners for motorcycles but it sounds like its similar.

I found its pot luck with add on boxes, some work and some are a pain -even the same make of box on the same type of bike and exhaust/airfilter set up
The interface boxes which don't stay on the bike are better in my experience, the one I have allows the Air Fuel Ratios to be set using the factory mapping software at the dealers.

So my vote is for remaps rather than boxes. I know nowt about diesels, would I be right in thinking that they would lean out the AFRs rather than enrichen them as with EFI bikes?? and therefore; emissions would be less??

A re map is so much better than a plug in box IMO as it can be altered for what you need, it don't really effect the emmisons on desiel motors so much depending on the map and your driving style can see increased emmisons and smoke though.

Transit is remapped, always goes through on a fast-pass test, pulls like a steamtrain... well worth the money. Forget tuning boxes, waste of time. Whilst they are in there they can flatten the EGR map and tune out any DPF regen that's there too.

Mine is a last of the old model 65 plate navara. Was going to be an izusu, but was offered a top deal on this. Last me years it will.

My other half prefered it to her car, as we live a long a 1 mile dirt road in the sticks. So she traded her volvo in on an izusu. Drives much better than mine, much smother. But not sure on build quality. Tie down options in navara suit me better too with the rails. Much better for strapping down a full size argon bottle anyway.

That's why I asked what truck he had. I have an 07 plate D40 and get major problem with going into limp mode. I won't pay for a remap until I have solved that.

Have you got an OBD2 code reader? It could be something simple like the fuel filter.

It throws no codes mate . Not even after a limp mode episode... we have been airing towards a fuel pressure sensor but at 90 quid it's a bit of a gamble.

Oh and yes it's just had a new fuel filter in case it was that.

I'd be looking more at the boost pressure sensor if it's lacking power without a fault code.

If you are doing 70 in the outside Lane and you need to boot it to get past quickly it will often go to limp mode leaving you up ×÷=%_ Creek without a paddle.

Also at low speed if you boot it to pull away off an island it drops to limp mode. An ignition turning off and on puts it back to normal....but no codes are left.
