Last pumps that had a governor were inline pumps - since then we have had decades of rota diesel pumps and now common rail injection.

Diesels were good when they had inline pumps.

Diesels were good before they treated them like petrol engines - perfomance wise.

Every day is a school day. I would imagine this big flat spot could be tuned out then? I have no idea why they would build a low revving motor with a huge gulf in the power delivery at low rpm.

It'll cruise at 70mph at 2000rpm all day long and do it for over 800 miles without a stop, and I shan't be getting rid of it unless/until it falls apart big time.

The issue is that to get acceptable power out of a diesel you need massive amounts of boost. This isn't all bad, unlike in a petrol where you get more power but economy suffers, in a diesel you get better economy *AND* more power with boost (and no throttle[1] so no need to lose boost on a closed throttle).

Downside is with downsizing and chasing ever higher outputs the amount of boost has been raised and this seems to have badly affected the boost threshold (ie the point at which the turbo starts to make boost), to the extent that you're waiting an eternity before it starts to make boost and outside of that there is absolutely no torque. This then leads to horrible, lag, lag, lag, then ~250-500rpm wide powerbands followed by running out of puff.

Ends up needing multiple turbos or clever variable vane turbos to manage to fill the low rev hole.

I hate it. It's particularly annoying at roundabouts where you end up approaching in 2nd, spot there is a gap, put your foot down and ....nothing.

[1] Well, except that modern diesels *DO* have a throttle but we won't go there right now.

My van is the same as this, nothing below 1250 RPM at all then it shoots off like two stroke on the pipe then at 4000 RPM it's all over.
It's a real PITA to drive in town and needs constant gear shifting just to keep up with traffic, I tend to leave it in a lower gear now and just let it rev! I told them to get me an auto for this very reason but they weren't interested as it's cheaper not to!
It's not cheaper on fuel, clutches or gearboxes in my experience...

A friend of mine had an Audi S5 and had a remap done by one of the well known companies. Definitely gave it a bit more edge but not a lot of use when your driving to the local supermarket. Think it was about £250. A month later and he took the car into the Audi dealer for its service. When he collected it he noticed on the right-up that they had 'updated' the ecu software to latest Audi release. On the return journey, the car was back to its original performance as this had overwritten the remap. He was seriously pi**ed off but the remap company came out to him and did it again for £50 as a gesture of good will. An expensive lesson.

A couple of my mates ran those V10 Touareg`s, one got it chipped and not long after the engine went bang , he sorted the engine and then the gearbox went bang, then the turbo`s went so he bought a doner vehicle for bits and it wasnt long after that both were scrapped. The other mate ran one for about ten years and that only recently ate a gearbox, other than that its been 100% reliable. I know of so many 4x4 chipped tow trucks that have given up, I am not convinced on the merits of chipping a vehicle.

Manufacturer's know better than anyone else how to tune their engines to get the characteristics they desire but also the regulations they have to meet (see VW's dieselgate). Remapers (and vw, until they were caught) exploit the fact that the annual emissions test is not as stringent as the criteria manufacturers must meet. They create engines that are miles off the standards they are supposed to meet but don't fail the pretty lame "smoke" test.

You don't get something for nothing. Yes, altering the maps can increase power and reduce fuel consumption. The price that is paid is combustion temperatures. They increase and vastly increase NOx output, especially if EGR (who's sole purpose is to reduce combustion temperatures and therefore NOx) and adBlue (who's job it is to hoover up NOx that is produced) are deleted as well.

Increased combustion temperatures, for the driver, is not in and of itself a terrible thing. Can result in a more complete burn (more mpg) and because of that, allow more fuel in the lean burn mix (more power) without excessive unburned HC exiting the pipe. NOx is, however bad for everyone living downstream from the tailpipe. Which we should all care about.

The increased combustion temperatures can result in problems as can dealing with the extra power in an otherwise stock drivetrain. But that's just a problem between owner and tuner, no different to any modifying really, in my opinion.

Exactly that, a bit embarrassing, and even dangerous, unless you instantly dip and slide the clutch a little to get things rolling.

If manufacturers franchises will sell you a set of car mats for £500 a set and a service without an oil change for £300 - software updates to overcome their faulty code from the factory - for £hundreds at a time. They would sell you performance maps - if it was good idea - it would be easy income stream for them - they made the maps.

the only manufacture I have seen to offer factory remaps from the dealership is Isuzu. Cost a small fortune and you lost your truck for a couple of weeks as they would rip out the echo and send it off to the factory.

Modern networked vehicles - will update on your driveway - over right a MAP when you park it up the next time you turn the key off.

New cars are not "standalone devices now".

Mapping a 2022 high spec BMW is nearly impossible - unless you drop its coms devices as well.

certainly wouldnt recomend on a l200, the engines are made of toffee , hence why the one I bought second hand for £50 is on the low economy setting ....suits my purpose fine .

Only driven a V10 Tourag once - I really liked it (this was after we put a gearbox in it - huge money). Couple of my customers have the V6 ones (nice enough trucks).

I have driven a petrol 4.2 V8 one - early 2003 with a 300hp petrol AXQ engine in it. This I really/really liked.

I am not sure but I think they made a 6.0 W12 450hp one later?

Headlight fall out of all them - plastic spring clips just fall apart and headlights fall out - known problem!

Second thing was - the four blacked out Range Rovers must had enough firepower in them "to start a small war"!

I assume this would have had air cover by "blue thunder"...?

Glad it has gone by without any incident so far - whole thing has gotta be a meca for nutters.

I recently read some news article that said all the hundreds of foreign dignitaries arriving for her funeral are advised to come by commercial flights, and take a bus to get to the ceremony. No private planes, no massive entourage etc.

Last time I saw a US president, Obama, do a visitl to New Orleans, he flew in 32 vehicles!!

Shut down New Orleans airport, and caused our crew change to be delayed two days.....

Thinking about this while driving the other day.... I wonder if all the stories of dead engines etc. are more to do with driving style than the actual remaps?

when I used to do a lot of driving I had a heavy foot, but I never thrashed anything, was always pretty smooth pulling away etc. because that's how I drive


I've always had much better reliability from vans I drove vs my vans other people were driving

I had pressures turned up on an old transit. nothing to do with ECU's. used electric to turn it over and electric to drop pin on a solenoid to the fuel line to turn it off.

i've obliterated 3 bannanas to pieces (one block snapped in half). on the same van.

i'm a bit of a thrasher.

i think pushing lined blocks is a recipe for disaster. if there's like an inch thick wall sure.

I've heard nothing only good reviews from bluefin from superchips. If you stick to top manufacturers you shouldn't have a problem.
Young boy racers chip them and thrash them and then tell you their ****e when they blow up.
Driven sensibly its just nicer to drive and better mpg and a bit of poke their if you did need to pass someone.

wow.... those 2.5di engines were pretty indestructible.... how'd you kill so many?


I remember as a kid they'd only be serviced before an MOT no matter how many miles they'd done... normally they'd not be registering oil on the dip stick and the water bottle would be empty.... but they kept on running!

Bit of a lead foot I guess. I should of turned the pressures back down tbh. But kept the same intake all the time and didn't bother. On one of them there was only the crank holding it together big 2"x1" oval hole out the side wall missing. The others was just piston pieces at the bottom of the sump.

It was fast. For a transit. Had the big running gear on. Heavy load diff.
