that is a very old myth, lumps of metal cant become addicted to anything, what does happen is that the problem gets worse and so you end up using more and more to get the engine running

A lot of engines have ether start as standard for very cold conditions,
Leyand trucks with rolls royce eagles had them

start pilot system comes to mind used to have a rod you pulled out and pushed in a couple times to pump fluid into manifold had a glass bottle or tin of either type fluid fixed under bonnet

Many year ago I was servicing for Robert Droogmans in belgium and the Belga escort bdx was getting a little tired after a hard day at 9.5/10K I think it was ring /piston related ,down a little on cranking comp, but, once fired up and hot she ran ok.
it was the last day and we where fighting for the lead, we had to put the car in parc ferme but you are not allowed to open the bonnet and if pushed out you took a penalty so I ran a small pipe through the bulk head and made a splitter in the air box changed the nozzle on easi start can (which was cabled tied to the rollcage) for a wd 40 one with the red pipe on it, so i could seal that into the hose leading to the air box.
In the morning all he had to do was start cranking quick press of the nozzle and bingo a barkin BDA -------no penalties. Maybe not this particular year but nice to watch, look at the crowds after 2m 10 sec

I would put money on the starter motor ..Got the same engine in my lads motor spins over seemingly OK but a pig to start changed the glow plugs no difference ..A mate said starter motor changed it and fires up everytime with no heat ..
