When my father worked at Napier’s in the late ‘30s & 40s they were experimenting with running on coal dust. They would run fine, but the abrasive qualities of the dust caused major problems apparently
I can believe that. Going off at even more of a tangent, Tomorrows World featured an engine that ran on dried bacteria. IIRC the fed the bacteria on sewage, dried it out and fed it into an engine.
