Question for you diesel experts...
I had to put in a reconditioned engine and it is a right pain to start from cold (lumpy and needs about 4-5 starts attempts to stay running).
Also a silly amount of white. blue smoke bellows out of the exhaust. - however once it has warmed up (5 mins of driving - very little / none is there and after that engine restarts fine whilst it is still warm).
My mechanic has tried everything he can think off (including getting the injectors tested and the pump overhauled - however these were fine prior to the rebuild - and thinks it just needs running in now. it has done approx. 600 miles since it was put in - including a trip from Sheffield to Suffolk and back. I would have thought it run in now.
He has changed the glow plugs and I have confirmed that they are receiving the same volts as the battery - but was wondering if the relay could be faulty (the light comes on for 5-6 seconds), is there any way to check this (without removing the glow plugs and watching them glow on ignition turn)?
engine is a 2.8Litre (3L model) Toyota on a 1992 Hiace Camper (engine under passenger seat).
Could he have left something off / unplugged? I normally trust him - but this has been going on (although slowly getting better) since the engine was replaced in July / August. The van isn't run daily - but when it is run - I make sure that we are driving for at least 30 mins.
btw - you may have guessed - I know very little of mechanical thingys.
Any ideas to a solution?
Cheers
