Die Grinders

I have both air and electric die grinders and they both have their place, the air one has masses of torque and has a dead mans switch so it's safe.
I also have an electric 500w dewalt one i got form ebay for about 30 quid, it's great... until it grabs, then you want to throw it far far away as it will make a little bit of wee spill from you
So what i did to control the monster was to make a variable speed control from a 500w dimmer and a 1 gang socket, the 1 gang socket and 500w dimmer are plugged into the mains and the die grinder then plugs into the socket fed with a variable voltage from the dimmer, it also has the luxury of the dimmer being a push on/off for the easy dead man switch

That answers my next question, I was going to ask about varying the speed using an electrikal thingumajig. Cheers for that. I figure that being able to vary the voltage opens up the range of tools to go the end of the thing.

Hi Guys
It arrived yesterday. It is on my essential kit list, racked up on the end of the workbench. Everybody should have one.

Having used it I think it is a better bet then the long nosed versions as it can be used one handed.

The swarf is as nasty as advised, I keep finding slivers of it stuck in me. When it bites it is quite vicious.
But what a finish, and how easy to use, one handed work seems to be fine when working on small jobs, and it eats steel at an amazing rate.

The tools itself was £60.00 which seems a bit if a bargain, same one as Mantakev showed in the last post. if anybody is intereted I can PM a link to the supplier.

Next up is a set of carbide bits, I bought two with it but can see the advantage of a selection, and a dimmer switch.

I reckon buy the bits somewhere else, two of them bumped up the price.
but I reckon an essential item.
The swarf is like glitter, lovely I saw the brass version of it floating about the place today, glistening in the sunlight.
On fleabay you are looking at around £30 for 5 decent bits.
It is like the powered equivalent of a leatherman tool.

Just looked at the tread again and i have volts and watts mixed up. The dimmer supplys variable watts to control the speed of the grinder, the voltage is the same 240v.
The dewalt grinder is a beast on 500w!
