Die Grinders

Hi guys, I often find myself out of space to access work that needs grinding, I have been wondering about getting a mains powered die grinder, see link below, I have been looking at the Bosch and makita versions, link below to makita version, a bit dearer but more powerful and maybe better for access

Anybody used either of these or got any opinions about their usefulness.

Note, I dont want an air powered version, I have a small compressor and hate the noise of it, I also like the idea of being able to plug the tool in and go

So if I can flog my twister, see items for sale I might buy one of these.

there verry good and handy .powerfull as well .the downside id there quite bulkly as against an air operated one : preference onlyif i come across one cheap or at the rite price id get it

Link to the Makita no worky, was this the model you had in mind?

Won't go wrong with Bosch, Makita or Hitachi. I'd go for the Bosch you linked to for a basic die grinder, the makita for a long nose grinder as the Maikta offers variable speed unlike the more expensive long nose Bosch

As said more bulky than air powered die grinders, big plus at this time of year is that they get warm in use rather than cold. I've got the Bosch you linked too, on the rare occasions i can't get access with it i prefer a Dremel as it typically means i'm working on something delicate and power is bottom of the list priority wise

i have a dremmel 2 there realy underated .as they advetised them as a diy product cutting bent nails out of a worktop and cleaning rust of iron gates {AS IFF }but there brill for small jobs in confined spaces and delicate work

I've had the Makita one Hotrodder linked to for a couple of years. It's very good.
I used to wonder if it was just mine that got warm when using it, having never used any other - but now I know!

I reckon the longer nose might be more useful?

Re dremel, I have a copy from axminster tool with a flexineck that has had a real beating, no complaints, great for fine work but sometimes I want to get a bit meaner with it.

What about tooling to go on the business end?
Can you use carbide burrs?
Can you only use the tips as shown in the pics, or can you use larger diameter ones, like a disc with the spindle in the middle? mind I suppose one of those breaking up would be a good face destroyer.
Do the diferent colors of grinding stone mean anything?
I can remember years back buying some pinkish ones to go my old drill that were made of cheese or something as soft.

if u get various shapes of carbide cutters that should be sufficient. will last a long time. and cut all materials incuded stainless no probs

Yep long nose more versatile reach wise albeit heavier and bulkier overall
Carbide burrs- various different shapes, cuts (single cut/double cut/ 'non ferrous' cut) etc
Various stones, colour does mean something but it escapes me at the mo
Sanding points and drums
Polishing points, rubber, mandrels for different cotton tips etc

There'll be a maximimum diameter for the tooling in the specs somewhere, surface speed of the tool being fairly crititcal safety wise and related to diameter. The variable speed really shines in this respect and also with regards to use of polishing points etc

Both brands are just fine. Before making a purchase, you should know that there are three basic versions of electric die grinders:

Full four-inch man-eaters are also available in two inch size (a handful in confined spaces, but manageable).

Miniature die grinders, like the Bosh version you gave an URL for.

Bench grinders with a cable (typically four feet) running down to a small hand-piece.

Which is best for you is an individual decision, but you should check all of them out before buying.

bosh is best iv used them for years

Both air & electric versions can prove very useful for confined grinding/polishing applications. You also need to factor in the price of decent carbide burrs/accessories into your budget.

I read that you would sooner not have a pneumatic version but Imo there are several advantages over the electric models providing your compressor is suitable; You can purchase a small one for as little as £25.00, these are much easier to control and if you stall it, will not damage the motor, will not over heat and will generally be safer to use. If noise is an issue, then a simple set of earplugs/defenders are often useful to have in your workshop anyway.

Mine is nothing like that, I found an ebay bargin B&Q version of the dremel compleate with lots of spairs & the flex extention, cost me less than £5.00 But are £30 new. Mine is great for getting into small ports on 2T cylinders.

Decide what you want to use it for: I've got a Makita straight drive at 30,000+ RPM. Great for carbide burrs and small grindstones, but you'll burn it out using flap wheels. For more torque I use a Metabo geared die grinder about 7,000 RPM. Both have 6mm collets.W/A

heres a picture of an air die grinder there small compact and powerfull the beuty is they can run from nill to full speed without loss of power at any range .the cutter i use most is cone shaped carbide. the reason is it can be started on the tip giving good controll without snatching and chatter then working up the cone to full speed. it will. cut stainless steel no problem and last a long time

I have an Air powered Die Grinder, did look at an electric one but after having one "grab" I soon changed my mind.

I have a large 23cfm compressor and I too don't like the noise, so it lives in one of the outbuildings, with the air fed through pipes underground into the workshop.

Air tools all make alot of noise, even the high end ones I have, a quick stripdown and a bit of scotchbrite in the exhaust port soon shuts them up

thats a good idea i sumtimes just wrap a rag round taped on the one i own ive had 30 years it belonged to an american engine manafacturer not a million miles from my house they gave me it

Another good way to quieten them down is to fit a large hose to the exhaust port about 2' (600mm) long, this vents the noise further away from your ears. You don't need to stuff anything down it, you do have to run a whip lead though

Yeah, to degree. Certainly more versatile than fixed speed but as said electrical variable speed means slowing it down = less cooling and less torque from the motor too

Yes, thats the one I have. But it gets very hot using 2" flap wheels at 7000RPM, hence I bought the Metabo. Had them both a few years with no problems. W/A
