Die grinder vs flexi shaft?

Just been outbid on fleabay on a Dewalt die grinder ~£60 was my tops. Then I found a flexi drive shaft for use with a power drill – here -

anybody used one like this? Are they any good? Would be a cheaper alternative as I have a tin of grinding bits from a car boot.

What are you using the die grinder for? In my opinion I don't think that you will get enough rpm from your drill to use it as you intend.

Also a good way of blowing drills up is to use them at high RPM for long periods.
How do I know this? Well I once did it as a research project wire brushing a bike frame.

Hello Steveh,

as Firstyear says a drill is too slow, mounted points and burrs are designed for much higher speed than a drill and will not cut well and\or wear out too quickly.
Air die grinders are quite cheap to buy but use a large amount of air.

Need to prep the n/s sill on my VW T25 transporter also rear n/s wheel arch. My 4” angle grinder does not do all the tricky corners. Also need something slim to get between the inner sill and floor pan.

I know the air tools are cheap but a 12cfm compressor must be £200+. I’ll have to see how I do with my dremel multi.

There are also minature die grinders on air. They take a 3mm shaft and run at round 50000rpm. They fit into the tightest corners.

As I have a T25, like you, I would probably use a combination of angle grinder and my B&D powerfile. it'll take a few belts too do it but should work, don't force the file/take your time........

MM do em about £50, air versions available but tend to be 2 or 3 times the price

Hi I use a bosch router with a 6 mm collet tkes a tungsten bit, the bosch routers can be had cheeply on the bay and the body remove fron the the carriage ,other makes do the same thing,HTH

Not going down the air route - limited funds - maybe next year - so it looks like the B&D or keep looking for another dewalt die grinder.

Dusty - as a T25 owner - what guage steel am I looking at for the panels, sills, chassis and outriggers? How do you rate my chances with a Clarke 90 with argoshield lite and .6mm wire?

I did exactly the same with a cheap Black and Decker router a couple of years ago, took the motor unit out and binned the router, the shaft has a 6mm collet and takes standard burrs and points, spindle speed is around 22,000 rpm. Only drawback is that the spindle is quite short. At work I use two die grinders with extended shafts for cleaning the inside of pipe preps, one is high speed at 25,000 rpm for burrs and points and the other is variable speed up to around 7,000 for flaps and wire wheels.
