I recently bought a Clarke 150TE welder to replace my SIP, the difference is amazing! I have now run a 16A supply to an external 16A blue industrial socket and made up a proper 16A extension cable (with blue cable!) for the welder. I also fitted a copper faced 400A clamp and bought a disposable Argon / CO2 bottle, I normally use my big food grade CO2 bottle but wanted to see the difference before I commit to anything.
When running the welder at full power with the Argon / CO2 gas I didn't get the normal crackle i'd expect but just a buzz / hum and the wire feeding into a glowing haze. The resulting weld was quite smooth and neat. There was a loud 'pop' though at a fairly regular intervals, maybe once a second or every couple of seconds?
I put it back on CO2 and tried a weld, the wire speed was now too high and it crackled and spat and was generally awful, even when I turned down the wire speed.
From what i've read it seems like that is spray transfer then? I tried adjusting the wire speed to see what would happen but it just seemed happier doing that than dip transfer, however the 'pop' didn't want to go away - is this normal?
And if anyone is interested I bought all the bits for my new power supply from my local B&Q Warehouse store, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg either.
