Because I am doing it for fun and not planning on chopping through nails**

I can assure you Steve. I don't plan on chiseling nails either.
Sharpening for me is a weekly/monthly chore I'm afraid. A necessary evil

no one likes catching a nail with a chisel. my worst enemy is buying quality auger drills and hits a nail or screw 1st time use 
it wont happen if your just doing diy on new wood but a regular occurrence out on jobs

I have a rough set of chisels and use extended hss drill bits if I think theres something there

I do have a substantial hoard of paraffin from a shed clearance (still in the antique oil cans it was stored in) but I’m not sure I want to have it kicking about in the workshop and get it all over my hands while I am sharpening. It may be a good choice for some of my oil stones which desperately need flattening out and servicing. Fair bit of money tied up in them I discover when I looked at replacing them.

flatten and service . rub them up on concrete paving slabs . ive scored a fair few quality worn ones for a quid each and rubbed them up to like new

yes, I’ve been using the back of a ceramic tile with some success but some of my older stones need a lot of work. Now I have a new diamond plate, I can use my old one to get them roughly flat.

If you put 'window cleaner spray msds' into Google, you get a little insight into the contents - main one seems to be IPA. The 'Astonish' one is interestign as it gives a very acid pH value.

In the old days in metalwork, they used soda water for coolant or cutting fluid. Would that have the required non-corrosive properties?

I honestly don’t know what it is about specific types of window cleaner that makes it particularly suitable for use as a lapping lubricant. I assume it is a mixture of water and mineral oil or solvent (like IPA) but it is certainly nothing to do with it being a window cleaner per se. Received wisdom tells me “auto glass” cleaner is the specific recommended type, presumably because whatever the cocktail is, it is also suitable for use on metals.
I will see if I can find out what the chemical mechanism is which makes window cleaner the ideal candidate but I am pretty sure it will be a particular type that happens to be suitable for this application rather than all window cleaners.

What about Methyl esters / B100 / aka 'biodiesel'?
Does many tribological things very well ... plus there's no DPF involved.
