Pinion height is normally set in stone with a value etched on it as a plus or minus on height which is matched to a crown wheel, Excess "backlash" is normally dealt with by engagement of the crown wheel to the pinion ie shims or adjusters on the diff carrier as in bring the crownwheel closer to the pinion.

great news in that case I am not even going to remove the pinion gear in this instance. Glad I waited for answers
