Grind that original weld off, space out the hinge from the post, maybe even chamfer the hinge to get good penetration..... needs around 200amps I'd guess.....or arc weld it..

Yes, I've grind it back to original shape and I've chamfered the hinge edges to get better penetration. Thanks for the advice

Its an ESAB Rogue 210EMP Pro, yeah i see that it needs more heat from from the replies! All useful information.

I assume that's a 210 ISH amp machine? If so just max it out really and you won't go far wrong

assuming you are welding 8mm thick tabs onto the upright, and 1 amp per thou, 8x40 is 320 amps for a full penetration weld so you want all you can get from a 210 amp machine. my 250 amp mig would be the same but personally i would want to stick weld it with a 3.2mm rod or bigger, but the mig, both sides and maybe chuck a few extra passes in for good measure if ultimate strength is required

The H beam is 8 or 10mm cant remember and hinge thickness is 12mm and I'm working off mains power in shed

Presumably a 32A commando socket?
