Diagnosis??

Good evening,

Obviously, I'm very much a beginner welder. I've done small welds and they're not too bad tbh but I'm making new gates and hanging them to large H beams on our farm. I've cleaned the materials all fairly well and I've adjusted voltage and my wire speed etc as it's thicker steel than I'm used to and I want good penetration, but I'm making a complete mess of it! This is incredibly frustrating! Is it gas related, too much wfs or there could be some wind preventing gas. My machine was set at 19.2 volts, wfs 5.8 mpm. Co2 82% Argon 18%. Set at around 10-12 litres per hour. Any constructive help/critisicm is appreciated.

No issues with gas coverage but that weld is stone cold.
What machine are you using?

Crank the voltage up a bit, turn the wire up til you feel the torch pushing you away, then tweak it down til that stops...if it's too hot, turn wire down a bit, when it starts sputtering turn voltage down and repeat the process...if it needs a more heat, volts up and repeat until you find something it likes...

For thick gate stuff I just max the machine to be honest

That's my default setting.
Same with motorbikes and cars really.

what machine have you got, save fortune, use stick on that if you can

Grind that original weld off, space out the hinge from the post, maybe even chamfer the hinge to get good penetration..... needs around 200amps I'd guess.....or arc weld it..

Grind it off and reweld! More power next time. What you have there is cold lap, where the bead sits on top of the steel, probably not connected to any of it. If you had done this in stick you would have a line of slag along the lower edge of the bead.

1. What are the dimensions of the H section gate post (H x W x Flange/Web Thickness), plate thickness used for gate pivot plate and what is the maximum ampage of your welder unit???

2. Generator out on site or workshop mains powered????

All the above about cranking the power up..plus a little tip that gets me over the hill on thick metal, get the work set up and heat it up with a mapp gas bottle till it goes slightly blue..this bleeds all the moisture out and being hot helps the welder if your close to being maxed out.

perfect solution right there..

And if you are worried about security and the bolts being undone, weld the nut to the bolt when it's tight

I think the op needs to buy/ borrow a small arc welder for jobs like this, far more suitable for outside work and more doable on thicker material when having to use an extension lead than with a mig.

The amperage of my welder is 210 amps. Its an Esab 210 EMP

The H beam is 8 or 10mm cant remember and hinge thickness is 12mm and I'm working off mains power in shed

Its an ESAB Rogue 210EMP Pro, yeah i see that it needs more heat from from the replies! All useful information.
