Don't open it up, I have done a few 5th gear replacements on those boxes that's a doddle as it is outside the casing I,m sure you would need some kind of jig to reassemble.

im not going anywhere near it...i was offered a free box from a friend of my mrs the other day as they are breaking their megane saloon...didnt even go to look at it. not interested in fixing it, if it keeps going then fine, if it breaks then i will burn it an buy something else

Had quite an amusing time earlier, took the dog out to a local castle as its got some good cover for training, took the mrs and my son too...when pulling out of the car park a bloke came belting up shouting 'TURN IT OFF QUICK!!!' repeatedly and waving at me like i was mental...
as soon as he got to me he told me my engine was gone!...'where?' i asked...
he looked at me as if id just given him a dead cat and then decided to tell me again 'It's Gone!' in a rather panicked voice...
once again i asked 'where has it gone?'
at this point he thought he would break out his mechanical knowledge and tell me that had either the engine had dropped out the bottom and the noise was the driveshafts being broken, or the crank must have snapped and come out the sump!...
so with that i drove off with a wave and a smile and i just prey to god he doesnt do work to his own car very often.
by the time he had got to me i had already driven maybe 600 yards, over speed bumps etc...hard to see how i would have done that with an engine dragging along the floor or with no Crank!
im not fixing anything else unless its a safety issue, and even then i will be thinking hard about whether its really needed...
while it drives, i will drive it and when it finally gives up i will buy something else...

But you won't burn it and buy something else now will you?
You'll fix a few more 'little' bits, then when the next thing goes wrong it'll be "it's only £x, I've just spent £xx so I might as well".
Before you know it, you'll have that gearbox all over the patio
