Dewalt XR - which battery to choose?

I'm going to order one in the morning (when I'm sober), got works Fein here, so useful for those hard to reach bits.

Whats the vibration level like? We've a Bosch as well at work, corded, it's shocking.

Numb hands. Ahhhh.

It's good.

Use mine for an hour at a time when chopping window cills out. The variable trigger is handy too.

Lol. Doubles up as a polisher too.

After 8 hours sanding ledged doors I made yesterday I can honestly say I wouldn't have got done without it. Can't use it one handed. It's very aggressive when you crank it up

Cant use it one handed, must be a beast!

We've a nice Makita at work, one handed is fine.

if it takes two hands, it must have some power, then at that price I'd expect nothing less.

Can get a guard that goes around the front. When the guard touches the side the disk is within a mm of what your sanding up to.

Once Xmas is out of the way il be having one

I used 2 disks all day thanks to the extraction/blowing.

Totally not going to help you with battery purchases but I've got one to throw into the hat to solve your wanting a cordless lawnmower.

If you've only got small patches, I'd highly recommend a Bosch AHM 38 manual reel mower. It's cordless, you can carry it one handed, and it's tiny. It's basically an old Qualcast model that says Bosch on it. You will have to sharpen it yourself the first time to get it to work properly because it will arrive sort of poorly matched to the blade, but it's hardly a tall order, and I'd recommend putting some heavy grease on the drive pin in the clutch because it clatters around. Having fixed the cost-engineering in mine, I'm well chuffed.

My stuff is all ryobi and almost all 4ah batteries, mainly because that's what the kits came with but they're a decent balance between weight and runtime. The lawnmower takes 2 at a time and cuts a decent amount.

I’m just having a wobble between Dewalt and Makita. As I’m looking to replace my corded drill too, the most used power tool I have, it’s the drill I’m focusing on to get perfect - the rest is much of a muchness.

It comes down to the Makita DHP481 and the Dewalt DCD996 - both are on a par in the reviews. Both 5AH and both brushless. And both could replace both my cordless Makita drill and my corded Bosch one too (I have a corded SDS for big stuff).

For the combo kit (drill and impact driver) including these flagship drills, the Makita package is £50 more expensive than the Dewalt. BUT all the tools I want to buy later are consistently cheaper from Makita - cheap enough that I could replace them in one go (£80 for their oscillating saws and 85mm circulars, just £130 for a small mower and they have a good selection of die grinders too - angle grinders and impact wrenches are well priced too).

I believe the battery system on Makita is also a little more clever than that on Dewalt (cooling fans in the chargers and more battery protection too).

But with such a massive following in the US, I suspect the Dewalt 5.0AH system will have more longevity in the marketplace.

I have 2ah,4ah and 5ah. They all have their place. Small ones are ideal for torches etc but I often use a 2ah on the multitool or impact driver because it makes them small and lighter.

There are numbers that show the bigger batteries are more powerful due to format of the batteries but even a 1.5 or a 2.0 will be a big step up from an old Ni-Cad especially on a brushless tool.

For DIY use you could easily get away with 2ah batteries. The first thing I when I get new ones is mark them with a number in a place that won't rub off. That way you can make sure they are getting even use and if you get one that is under performing you can keep an eye on it.

I have Dewalt and I am more than happy with it all, the bare tools are often available at good money in Screwfix which is ideal if you suddenly need something at the weekend.

One thing to be aware of with Makita is if the batteries drop below a certain level a number of time the circuit board cuts them and they'll never charge again.

One thing that has never changed is that the cheapset way to buy batteries is with a tool or buy them in multi packs. Often it's cheaper to buy a toolkit with charger and batteries than to buy the batteries on their own.

I've got the Dewalt one and it's very comfortable to use. The deal they had in Screwfix was really good, not sure if this is the same one. At one time the bare tool was £149 but you could buy one with an accessory kit and a case for £199( I think it may have even come with charger and 2ah batteries)

I'll have to scour the site, would quite like it in a box ideally, and maybe some more batteries.

Just fighting double glazed unit currently .....

Go for 4/5ah in the kit and buy a 2ah separately. Screwfix had them at £20 a few weeks ago.
If you have old DeWalt tools you can get an adaptor too.

I think the 996 is what I have, the 3 speed gearbox makes it beat the Makita in my book, I love the wrist-breaky torque . Ultimately it comes down to picking your favourite colour, high viz yellow or anti theft teal, both will perform just fine and last years in the hands of a DIYer.
