dewalt knackered clutch

I have two newish dewalt 18v drill/drivers with knackered clutches.
Are they repairable? One is my fault I was doing a couple of thunder bolts into a stone wall, a bit brutal maybe.
the other has bee used as per normal.
Is there a company who would fix them at a reasonable cost or is it time to shut up and upgrade? to what?

I did try taking one back to screwfix but they have no record mf me buying it and receipt is lost

If you bought it fro Screwfix have a look at your transaction page. This should tell you everything you have bought from them.

How is it knackered? Slips when it should not do so, or does not slip when it does? Try to narrow down the cause for the fault: is it a mechanical disconnection between the adjusting ring and the clutch or something internal worn out or broken?

Look up 'Dewalt spares' on Google. See if there is an exploded diagram and parts list for your model. That will give you some idea on what each piece costs.

I have never used the clutch on a drill/driver. Maybe of some use to a chippy or drywall installer, at a very low setting.
For Thunderbolts, metal-to-metal bolting, coach screws, in fact everything else: impact driver/impact wrench all the way!
You may be able to get a "bare tool" impact driver compatible with your existing DeWalt batteries.

Impact driver is next on the list.
Probably a cheapy or SH as it would rarely get used.
Model no on one is DCD778.
Fault is set the torque even at no15 then hold the chuck and the clutch just slips ok at high settings it does take some stopping.
But should not slip

I helped a mate strip down a load of dewalt tools a week or so ago,
Pretty much every spare part is available but some of the bits are half the price of a new tool.
For some parts it was just as cheap to buy a used version of the same thing and keep the broken one as spares.

Obviously if you buy a used one you run the risk that it might not last long but that's much the same risk as putting a new clutch in yours and finding the motor gives up the week after.

First thing to do is take it apart and make sure it is actually the clutch that's gone, not something else in the drive train.
Then just google the model number + spare parts and it should be easy to get a price on the bit you need and make a decision from there

Miles are good, but pricey. LS Engineers tend to be cheap but slow. Parts Shop Direct are a subsidiary of someone else and are good.

They say I've bought nothing since October. I'm in there about five times a week!

I changed the gearbox on the 18v dewalt drill I use with my wire brushes recently (it's the one I'm happy to destroy)....I found a bloke on ebay selling the gearboxes new....came complete with a new chuck too....I think it was £25 which was still cheaper than a new drill. If you swap it out with the chuck attached it's very easy.

I know enough people using enough different brands of cordless tools to have seen that they can all have problems. I have seen cheap ones last for years and really expensive stuff that's packed up within weeks of new.

I stick with the brand I have because I am invested in the batteries but if I was starting from scratch it would be form & function that I based my decision on rather than everybody's opinions on how reliable they were. Unless I needed a specific range of tools that only one manufacturer offered

the dewalt factory is just up the road from us at spennnymoor who repair them but probs not worth repairing by the time you post them

I ended up with DeWalt because they were first on the market with gasless nailguns.

No complaints. Recently bought into flexvolt with a mitre saw

I've not had one of those newer dewalts apart but I've stripped many of the older ones & they have a very simple clutch system.

The ring you twist to adjust the torque has a cam inside it that pushes against a rod that in turn adjusts the preload on a spring. The spring holds 2 discs together with ridges on the faces, one disc attached to the motor, the other disc to the gearbox, very similar to a car. By adjusting the preload you let the discs slip, just like slipping a car clutch.

What normally happens is the plastic cam or the end of the rod wears away. You could try making the rod a tad longer with a dab of weld if its steel. The other problem could be a broken or weak spring. Not sure if spares are available but with dewalt you normally can only buy a complete gearbox.

They're easy to take apart but take pics as you go & put alignment marks on everything. Be careful not to let the gear rings & gears fall out of the gearbox casing, they are fiddly to put back in!

I find dewalt parts prices quite expensive whereas makita are quite reasonable. Makita also break down the parts more so instead of buying a gearbox you can buy just a gear.

if you bought it from screwfix they guarantee it for a year and will sort it .the switch went on mine and it was fixed in the week no problem .if you register it with dewalt thers 3 year guarantee on it. if not registered screwfix wont entertain it after the year
